Belgium vs Albania UEFA Euros Tournament Record

Belgium’s Red Devils have a fairly decent record in the UEFA European Championships, albeit the majority of their comparative success has come in recent years.

Belgium has twice hosted the event, acting as co-hosts with neighbours the Netherlands on one of those occasions, and indeed their first participation in the finals came in 1972 when they were individual hosts. They finished third out of four on that occasion.

Eight years later, they were unlucky to lose the final to West Germany in Rome, with Horst Hrubesch scoring twice for the victors.

Group stage exits came in 1984 and 2000, and these were sandwiched by failed qualifying attempts.

At Euro 2016, they did well to secure a path through their group before falling to a surprise defeat against Wales in the Quarter-Finals. Four years later, at Euro 2020, they eased through their group, winning all three games, before defeating Portugal to set up a Quarter-Final with Italy, which they lost 2-1.

It would be fair to say that Albania’s record in the UEFA European Championship is less than glorious. They failed to qualify between 1964 and 1972 and did not take part in the tournament at all in the next two editions.

They were unsuccessful in qualifying attempts from 1984 to 2012 but finally cracked it to make it to the Euro 2016 finals in France.

Their first finals game was against Switzerland, and they fell to an early Fabian Schar goal in Lens before losing to hosts France in Marseille. They completed their first finals tournament with an impressive 1-0 win over Romania, but that wasn’t enough to secure a path to the last 16.

As of 2023, Belgium and Albania had only met in two matches, both of these coming in the qualifying stages ahead of the 1986 FIFA World Cup.
