Belgium vs Ukraine UEFA Euros Tournament Record

While it’s true that Belgium are rightly considered one of the leading European national team sides, it has not always been the case.

Indeed, prior to Euro 2016, with the exception of a fine run to the Euro 1980 final, Belgium had repeatedly failed to deliver the goods.

Belgium hosted the finals in 1972 and finished third, albeit with only four teams competing in that edition of the competition. In Italy, at Euro 80, they performed heroically to finish top of a group of death that included Italy, Spain, and England before they lost to West Germany in the final.

Group stage exits followed in 1984 and 2000, and in the intervening 16 years, they failed to qualify, and another 16-year gap followed, but at least at Euro 2016, they did actually show signs of genuine improvement.

In France, they saw off the Republic of Ireland and Republic of Sweden to finish second in their group and then beat Republic of Hungary 4-0 in the Round of 16 and with the momentum behind them, national team coach Marc Wilmots will have expected his side to defeat Wales in the Quarter-Finals, but they were surprisingly beaten.

Four years later, Belgium were once again effective in the group phase, winning all three games, before beating Portugal in the Round of 16. Roberto Martinez’s side were then stopped in their tracks by Italy in the Quarter-Final, with the Italians then going on to win the competition.

Ukraine failed to qualify for each of the first three UEFA European Championship tournaments they were eligible for and made their first appearance as hosts in 2012 when they shared those duties with Poland.

They started that tournament with a bang, with two goals from legendary forward Andriy Shevchenko, capping off a fine comeback win over Sweden. Losses to France and England, however, meant they were eliminated from the competition.

In 2016, they qualified due to their results, beating Slovenia in a play-off, but in France, they lost all three of their games and failed to score a single goal.

At Euro 2020, they did a lot better, beating North Macedonia and losing narrowly to both the Netherlands and Austria but somehow still getting through to the Round of 16.

There, they once again beat Sweden, this time Artem Dovbyk scoring a 121st-minute winner in Glasgow. That set up a Quarter-Final with England, which Gareth Southgate’s side won easily 4-0 in Rome.
