Genesis was formed in the mid-1960s by school friends Peter Gabriel, Tony Banks, Anthony Phillips, Mike Rutherford and Chris Stewart. The band released their debut studio album in 1969, From Genesis to Revelation, proving a moderate hit but one that certainly led to a great deal of interest from critics.
By the time the band released their fifth album with 1973's Selling England by the Pound, drummer Phil Collins had joined the band, and that release earned the band their first ever top ten UK Album Chart hit and also saw the album make waves in the US.
The band were reduced to a three-piece by the time they released their hugely successful ninth studio album, And Then There Were Three, selling well around the world and gave the band their first smash hit single with Follow You, Follow Me. This was the first release following the departure of Peter Gabriel, who, of course, would go on to forge a strong solo career.
Duke, released in 1980, took the band to the top of the UK charts, and their self-titled 12th studio album took the band to a whole new level, selling four million copies in the United States alone and spawning a string of singles that charted well, including Mama, That's All, Taking It All Too Hard and Illegal Alien.
During this period, Phil Collins was proving a big solo star, and the band's next album, Invisible Touch, would be their last for five years. It was again a huge seller, selling over six million copies in the US and was a big critical hit.
That album was backed by a massive tour that saw the band play 112 dates to over three and a half million fans. It was one of the biggest events of the decade and proved just how big a group they had become.
In 1991 the band reunited for We Can't Dance, which gave them another string of hits and earned the band a Grammy Award nomination for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group With Vocals.
Genesis released their 15th and final studio album, Calling All Stations, which was once again a major hit across Europe and North America.
Over the course of their extensive history, Genesis have sold over 100 million records and have won a host of awards and accolades, including a Grammy Award in 1988 for Best Concept Music Video and an Ivor Novello Award for Outstanding Contribution to British Music.
