The Brooklyn Nets first tasted NBA action in 1976-77, when they were then known as the New York Nets.

Prior to this, they were the New Jersey Americans competing in the ABA before switching to the National Basketball Association.

Just a year later and they were renamed the New Jersey Nets when they relocated to the area.

The Nets secured five straight playoff finishes between 1982 and 1986, but they didn't taste NBA Finals action until 2001-02 when they lost out to the Los Angeles Lakers in a four-game blowout.

The following season they once again took the Atlantic Division and, this time, fell to the San Antonio Spurs in the NBA Finals, albeit in six games on this occasion.

Their success in this period was down in no small way to the brilliance of point guard Jason Kidd, who spend seven years at the franchise.

In 2012 they moved back to New York and change their name to the Brooklyn Nets as they switched their home court to the Barclays Center.

Indeed their move to Brooklyn was effectively aided by Rapper Jay-Z, who previously owned a small stake in the team.

Under former head coach Steve Nash, with a big three of Kyrie Irving, Kevin Durant, and James Harden, the Brooklyn Nets should have dominated the Eastern Conference, but they failed to live up to their reputation and will hope to rebuild following the departure of all three big names.
