Alanis Morissette Biography

Alanis Morissette was born in Ottawa, Canada in June 1974 and by the age of six she was learning piano and was taking dance lessons and was seemingly always heading for stardom.

In 1987 she recorded her first demo and her debut album, Alanis, was released in 1991 on MCA and was a moderate success in Canada. A year later Now is the Time, her second album, was a similarly unspectacular release.

She was then signed by Maverick Records and her third album, Jagged Little Pill, changed everything. It was released in June 1995 and was an astonishing success, selling over 33 million copies worldwide and made her instant mainstream success all over the world.

The album went to the top of the US Billboard Albums charts and in the UK and including a string of megahit singles such as the iconic You Oughta Know, You Learn, Hand in My Pocket, Ironic, Head over Feet and All I Really Want.

Jagged Little Pill earned her a string of awards including the Grammy for Best Rock Album, Album of the Year, Best Female Rock Vocal Performance and Best Rock Song.

Three years later she released her next album, Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie, which sold over two and a half million copies in the United States alone and going to number one again. Clearly it was never going to replicate the once in a generation success of her previous album, but by any other metric was an amazing success.

That album included the successful singles Thank U and Unsent and Alanis Morissette had confirmed her status as a bone fide star.

2002's Under Rug Swept once again topped the charts, which included another hit single with Hands Clean, and that was followed by So-Called Circus (2004), Flavors of Engagement (2008), Havoc and Bright Lights (2012), Such Pretty Forks in the Road (2020) and in 2022 by Alanis Morissette's tenth studio album, The Storm Before the Calm.
