Duran Duran History

Duran Duran were formed in 1978 in Birmingham by John Taylor and Nick Rhodes, the band's name coming from the 1960s movie Barbarella. Roger Taylor and Simon Le Bon completed the group's iconic lineup, and they released their self-titled debut album in 1981.

The record proved to be a worldwide hit, charting particularly well in the UK and the US and spawning hit singles including Planet Earth, Careless Memories and Girls on Film. Their second album, Rio, did even better, selling two million copies in the United States alone.

That album included the iconic singles Hungry Like a Wolf, Save a Prayer and Rio and helped to make the band a global success and one of the biggest bands of the 1980s. Their third album, Seven and the Ragged Tiger, gave the band their first-ever UK number-one album and was one of the best-received releases of Duran Duran's rich and storied career.

Hits included Union of the Snake, The Reflex, New Moon on Monday, and The Wild Boys, which helped cement the band's standing on the music scene. They then recorded the title track to the 1985 James Bond movie A View to a Kill, another massive success.

Their 80s success led to a new docu concert film from director Russell Mulcahy illustrating the huge heights the band scaled during this phase of their expansive career.

The early 1990s saw Duran Duran make a triumphant return to the big time with the release of their excellent Wedding Album, featuring their big hit Ordinary World. The record was well-received by critics and fans alike.

In 2021, after a six-year hiatus, the band released their 15th studio album, Future Past, which proved a massive success both commercially and critically.

That release was supported by a Future Past Tour that saw the band play countless sell-out dates, proving their continued popularity among a staunchly loyal fanbase that never seems to dim. A new studio album was released in 2023, with Danse Macabre once again breaking into the top ten in the UK and performing well across the world.

Every new album from the band is backed by a string of upcoming shows with song selections made up of familiar 80s tracks and other songs that the band's fastidious fans can't get enough of.
