William Michael Broad was born in Stanmore, Middlesex, in November 1955 and as a younger, his family moved to Bromley, in London, in the early 1970s. His love of music was borne of the punk era and is evidenced by his affiliation with a gang of Sex Pistols fans, which clearly influenced his look and sound across his entire musical career.

His colourful musical life began as the lead singer of Generation X, the punk & new-wave act that released their self-titled debut album in 1978 and followed that up with the Valley of the Dolls, which included hit single King Rocker which helped to cement their standing in the genre.

The band split up in 1981 and Billy Idol went solo.

His first EP included his trademark track Dancing With Myself, which remains a key song on his setlist.

His debut album was a moderate success, with singles White Wedding and Hot In the City proving successful, and his 1983 second album, Rebel Yell made him a star in the United States. It sold over two million copies in the US alone and spawned a series of hit singles including the title track, Flesh for Fantasy and Eyes Without a Face.

To Be a Lover was another top-ten hit in the US in 1986, and in 1987, he earned his first US number-one with a live version of Mony Mony. Across the 1980s and early 1990s, he was a consistent force both commercially and critically.

In 2005, twelve years since his last album, Billy Idol released his sixth studio album and Devil's Playground earned strong reviews and was followed, nine years later, with his seventh, with Kings & Queens of the Underground charting well in both the US and the UK.

In 2021, Billy Idol took to YouTube to release a video for his single Bitter Taste, which was followed by 2022's Cage.

As well as being a musical force to be reckoned with, Billy Idol has also branched out into acting, appearing in many movies and TV shows, including The Wedding Singer and The Doors.
