Cyndi Lauper Biography

Cyndi Lauper was born in June 1953 in New York City and grew up in the Queens neighbourhood. She was on the music scene from the early 1970s onwards. Initially, she sang with several cover bands before finding her own distinctive identity. She formed the band Blue Angel in the late 1970s before going solo to great success.

Her debut album as a solo artist, She's So Unusual, was released in 1983 and went on to become a worldwide smash hit. The record sold over 16 million copies around the world, with seven million of those coming in the United States alone.

The album spawned a string of massive singles, with Girls Just Want to Have Fun (which sold six million copies in the US), Time After Time (her first US number-one), She Bop, and All Through the Night all breaking into the US Billboard top ten. The album won countless awards, including getting her the Best New Artist Award at the Grammys.

She quickly became one of the favourite artists of the era, and the follow-up release, True Colors, was another big success, selling seven million copies worldwide. The title track earned her a second US number-one single, and Change of Heart also did well.

In 1989, her third album, A Night to Remember, was released and charted well, especially in the UK, where it was her first album to break into the top ten. Hat Full of Stars (1993), Sisters of Avalon (1996) and At Last (2003) all did well, though her Merry Christmas...Have a Nice Life, did less well.

It was always going to be hard to keep up with the level of success that Cyndi Lauper achieved early in her career, but she continued to release commercially and critically acclaimed material across the 1990s and 2000s.

She has also dabbled in acting and composing music and lyrics for musicals, such as her work on the musical adaptation of Kinky Boots, which helped earn her a second award at the Grammys in 2014, almost thirty years after her first.

She also continued to be one of the most exciting performers of her genre across this period, and in 2016, she released her twelfth studio album, Detour, which was successful in both the US and the UK.
