Joan Marie Larkin was born in September 1958 in Wynnewood, Pennsylvania, but her family moved to Rockville, Maryland, when she was a child. She started learning guitar early and got her first guitar at the age of 13.

The Runaways

By the age of 16, she had formed The Runaways with Sandy West, with Jackie Fox, Lita Ford, and Cherie Currie also joining the group. The band found instant success, and they toured with luminaries like the Ramones, Van Halen, Tom Petty, and the Heartbreakers.

She went solo, initially as just Joan Jett and then as Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, and her debut album, Bad Reputation, was released in 1980 and was a moderate success.

I Love Rock 'N' Roll

Her career trajectory was altered substantially with the release of her most famous track, I Love Rock 'n' Roll (produced by Kenny Laguna and Ritchie Cardell), which went to number one in the US and charted well across the world when it was re-released in 1982.
