Joan Marie Larkin was born in September 1958 in Wynnewood, Pennsylvania, but her family moved to Rockville, Maryland, when she was a child. She started learning guitar early and got her first guitar at the age of 13.
By the age of 16, she had formed The Runaways with Sandy West, with Jackie Fox, Lita Ford, and Cherie Currie also joining the group. The band found instant success, and they toured with luminaries like the Ramones, Van Halen, Tom Petty, and the Heartbreakers.
She went solo, initially as just Joan Jett and then as Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, and her debut album, Bad Reputation, was released in 1980 and was a moderate success.
Her career trajectory was altered substantially with the release of her most famous track, I Love Rock 'n' Roll (produced by Kenny Laguna and Ritchie Cardell), which went to number one in the US and charted well across the world when it was re-released in 1982.
It was featured on her second album and helped that record reach number two on the US Billboard Albums chart. Further singles from the record, Crimson and Clover, Nag, and Victim of Circumstance, all also performed well.
Album (1983), Glorious Results of a Misspent Youth (1984), Good Music (1984), Up Your Alley (1988) and The Hit List (1990) bookmarked perhaps the most successful period in Joan Jett's career and saw her releases regularly perform well on both singles and album charts in the US and beyond, resulting in gold albums and million-selling status.
In 2013, Joan Jett released her twelfth studio album, Unvarnished, which once again entered the US Billboard Albums chart before a lengthy period without output from both the Blackhearts & Joan Jett.
Joan Jett and her band released their first-ever acoustic album, Changeup, in 2022. The album scored glowing reviews, albeit not proving a massive commercial success.
Such has been the chaotic and memorable nature of Joan Jett's life, it became the subject of a successful 2010 movie with Kristen Stewart portraying her in the film, and Dakota Fanning playing Runaways member Cherie Currie.
Joan Jett is a genuine legend. In addition to selling millions of records worldwide and earning a number of prestigious accolades, she was a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee in 2015. Joan Jett and Kenny Laguna co-founded Blackheart Records, famously doing so from the back of Kenny's Cadillac, which would go on to champion emerging bands over the years and further elevate the singer's influential standing in the rock and roll industry and remains a thriving entertainment company.
Joan Jett live is an experience that will live long in your memory. She exudes raw rock appeal, and even now, some forty-plus years after she truly hit the big time, she puts on as vibrant a display as ever. That energy is one of the reasons why her fans worldwide flock to Joan Jett shows.
