FA Cup Fifth Round – Memorable Matches

Like all rounds of the FA Cup, the fifth round has seen some epic matches which live long in the memory.

Newcastle United 2-3 Manchester United (1989/90)

This tie came at a time when Alex Ferguson was facing mounting pressure at Old Trafford, having not yet delivered trophy success more than three years after his appointment as Man United manager.

Newcastle drew level after the Red Devils had twice gone ahead at St. James’ Park, before Brian McClair scored the winning goal to send Ferguson's team into the last-eight. Man Utd ultimately reached the FA Cup final, beating Crystal Palace at Wembley Stadium.

Everton 4-4 Liverpool (1990/91)

This Fifth Round replay was played at Goodison Park following a goalless draw at Anfield.

Everton equalised four times after Peter Beardsley (2), Ian Rush and John Barnes had put the Reds ahead on enemy territory. The teams still couldn't be separated and required a second replay at Goodison, as the Toffees claimed a 1-0 win over their arch-rivals.

Liverpool 1-2 Barnsley (2007/08)

This tie produced one of the most shocking FA Cup upsets in recent history as the Reds were defeated by a team loitering towards the bottom end of the EFL Championship at the time.

Liverpool manager Rafael Benítez fielded a rotated XI, with influential captain Steven Gerrard only named amongst the substitutes. Dirk Kuyt opened the scoring after 30 minutes, though Barnsley drew level shortly before the hour mark.

Brian Howard then found the back of the net deep into stoppage time to cause a major giant-killing as the Tykes emerged victorious at Anfield and remarkably went on to reach the semi-finals that year.
