Glen Hansard Biography

Glen Hansard was born in April 1970 in Ballymun, Dublin and he left school at the age of 13 and began busking in his local area. He cites among his early influences the likes of Leonard Cohen, Van Morrison and Bob Dylan.

In 1990 he formed The Frames and became a household name, both in Ireland and overseas, when he appeared in Alan Parker's hit film The Commitments.

The Frames released their debut album in 1991 with Another Love Song being a moderate hit with follow up efforts Fitzcarraldo (1995), Dance the Devil (1999) and For the Birds (2001) all being far more successful. Burn the Maps in 2004 proved their biggest release to date.

In 2007 he appeared in the astonishing critically acclaimed movie Once, which launched Glen Hansard tickets both as an actor and performer. The song Falling Slowly earned him an Oscar for Best Original Song and a host of other awards, including a Grammy once the film was turned into a successful musical.

Following the movie, Glen Hansard teamed up with co-star Marketa Irglova to form The Swell Season, and they released two albums that were very well received. Glen Hansard then went it alone and released his debut solo album, Rhythm and Repose, which charted well in the United States as well as the UK and Ireland.

Glen Hansard released his second solo album, Didn't He Ramble, in 2015, and his Between Two Shores (2018) & This Wild Willing (2019) releases both performed well commercially and were the recipients of great reviews, underlining the prolific nature he has as a musical juggernaut, still hitting the right notes some thirty plus years into his music career.

As a live act, he has earned a reputation as an amazing performer, and in 2022, he toured with Pearl Jam frontman Eddie Vedder on a string of dates, including at the Ohana Music Festival. In 2023, he released his fifth solo album, All That Was East is West of Me Now, which included the superb lead single, The Feast of St. John, featuring Warren Ellis.
