Biography Van Morrison

George Ivan Morrison was born in August 1945 in Belfast, Northern Ireland, and his early musical education came off the back of his father's wonderfully eclectic record collection, which saw him exposed to cited influences including Muddy Waters, Charlie Parker, Mahalia Jackson, Hank Williams and Woody Guthrie.

Early Musical Breakthrough

He started playing guitar at the age of 11 and, not long after, found himself playing in many local bands, honing his obvious talents.

In 1964, he got his first big break when he formed Them with Billy Harrison, Alan Henderson, and Ronnie Milling. The group released a series of hits, including Here Comes the Night, Mystic Eyes and Baby, Please Don't Go. They are perhaps best known for their track Gloria, which was, in fact, a B-side to the last of the three hit singles referenced.

Brown Eyed Girl

Van Morrison then opted to forge a solo career, and that was a decision that ended up bearing fruit in a big way. In 1967 his debut single, Brown Eyed Girl, was a global hit and launched him into superstardom.

His second studio album, Astral Weeks, was released in 1968 and though it was not initially a big commercial success, it has since gone to be considered one of the best albums of all time.

The critical acclaim the album has gone on to receive includes repeated inclusions on overall lists of top albums ever released.

Moondance followed in 1970 and was another success and the album included a string of classics, including And It Stoned Me, Moondance, Crazy Love, and Into the Mystic. It was another release that would go on to become a legendary album in the eyes of critics and fans alike.

Other albums that proved hugely successful, both commercially and critically, include Saint Dominic's Preview (1972), Into the Music (1979), Avalon Sunset (1989) - which features the classic Have I Told You Lately, Too Long in Exile (1993), The Healing Game (1997), Keep It Simple (2008) and Keep Me Singing (2016).

In 2023, Van Morrison released his forty-fifth studio album, Accentuate the Positive, which once again proved successful, both in terms of commercial performance and in terms of positive reception from his many fans.

Accolades

As well as selling tens of millions of records worldwide, including no less than 40 of his albums reaching the UK Top 40, Van Morrison has won a ton of accolades, which go a long way to rewarding his outstanding contribution to music.

He has won two Grammy Awards (secured in 1995 and 1997) and has seen four of his releases secure a place in the Grammy Hall of Fame. In 1994, he earned a Brit Award for Outstanding Contribution to Music and was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2003. He was welcomed into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1993 and earned an Academy Award nomination in 2022 for his song Down to Joy, which featured in Kenneth Branagh's film Belfast.
