William Martin Joel was born in the Bronx in New York in May 1949 but grew up in Long Island, and was heavily influenced by blues artists and massive groups such as The Beatles and The Everly Brothers, and at the age of 16, he joined the Echoes with Billy Joel playing the piano on several recordings, but Billy gave up on a career as part of a band and ended up opting to go solo, a career choice that clearly paid off.
Billy Joel released his debut album, Cold Spring Harbor, in 1971 to moderate success, but it would be his second album and its title track that would see his career skyrocket.
The Piano Man album was released in November 1973 and scored Joel his first big success on the Billboard Album Charts, with the record going on to sell four million copies in the United States alone.
The Piano Man single sold over five million copies and still forms a key part of his live show some fifty years on.
The Stranger, which included the hits Just the Way You Are, She's Always a Woman and Only The Good Die Young, proved another massive success before Billy Joel's sixth studio album, 52nd Street, earned him his first Billboard number one album and has gone on to sell over seven million copies in the US.
An Innocent Man was released in 1983 and earned much critical acclaim and commercial success. It remained on the US Pop album chart for an astonishing 111 weeks, and the record included his massive 1980s hit, Uptown Girl.
Tell Her About It, the first single released from An Innocent Man earned Joel his second number-one single in the US, but it was Uptown Girl that broadened his mainstream appeal and made him a superstar around the world.
In 1989, Billy Joel released Storm Front, another album that topped the charts around the world and spawned the mega-hit; We Didn't Start the Fire, which scored him another US number-one single and also sold well globally.
After a four-year break, Billy Joel put out his twelfth studio album, and River Of Dreams once again sold amazingly well and drew glowing reviews from critics. that was followed eight years later by Joel's thirteenth and, to date, final studio album, with Fantasies and Dreams being a more classically geared sound.
Billy Joel is a best-selling solo artist with over 150 million records sold, and he has also garnered a host of awards over the course of his lengthy career.
Among those are six Grammy Awards, a Primetime Emmy nomination, a Tony Award, and an MTV Video Music Award nomination for Uptown Girl, which starred his ex-wife, supermodel Christie Brinkley.
He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1999, seven years after he was ushered into the Songwriters Hall of Fame.
Billy Joel has been touring for the best part of six decades and is well known as one of the best performers around, with a music career that can best be described as epic.
