Bologna FC History

Founded in 1909, Bologna Football Club is based in the Emilia-Romagna region of northern Italy.

Bologna became champions of Italy for the first time in 1925, and repeated this feat four years later in what was the final edition of the Italian top flight before rebranding from the Divisione Nazionale to the Serie A.

The Rossoblù claimed the Scudetto three more times before the outbreak of World War II. Following the War, Bologna FC dropped down the rankings and failed to place inside the top three of Serie A for the best part of 20 years.

Finally, in 1964, Bologna were crowned Serie A winners for the fifth time. This remains the last time Bologna rose to the summit of Italian football, although the club did celebrate two Coppa Italia titles in 1970 & 1974.

In terms of European football, Bologna failed to make an impact when debuting in the European Cup during the 1964/64 campaign. The Italian side did compete in the UEFA Cup (precursor to the Europa League) in the late 20th century, reaching the quarter-finals in 1991 followed by a semi-final appearance in the 1998/99 season.

For much of the 21st century Bologna have mostly underwhelmed their loyal supporters. At the time of Thiago Motta's appointment as the club's new manager in September 2022, Bologna had finished in the top half of the Italian top flight only twice since 2003.

The former Italy midfielder subsequently took the Serie A by storm as he guided the Rossoblù to a fifth-place finish in the 2023/24 campaign, keeping company with the likes of AC Milan, Juventus and Roma. This saw Bologna qualify for the following edition of the Champions League, marking the first time they had qualified for UEFA's premier club competition in 60 years.
