2022/23 proved a monumental season for Napoli, with Luciano Spalletti’s side romping to their first Serie A title in over thirty years.
The Naples outfit topped the table from mid-September and finished some 16 points clear of their nearest rivals but are sure to face stiffer competition in 2023/24. The likes of Juventus, Inter Milan, and AC Milan are certain to bounce back, and Lazio and Roma will also look to mount a challenge in what promises to be an exciting season.

New Era in Naples
Prior to their recent success, it would be fair to say that Napoli fans’ only other real period of dominance occurred when a certain Argentine forward by the name of Diego Maradona took centre stage.
He led Gli Azzurri to two domestic titles, and it’s taken over three decades for Napoli to secure a third, and they did so in some style. Spaletti’s all-conquering side were marshaled at the back by a solid backline, including consistent keeper Alex Meret and defensive talents Kim Min-Jae, Mathias Olivera, and Giovanni Di Lorenzo.
On the attacking front, Nigerian forward Victor Osimhen was on fire, netting 30 goals in all competitions and ably assisted by Georgian wonderkid Khvicha Kvaratskhelia while midfield stars Stanislav Lobotka and Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa ruled the roost.
For 2023/24, the team will have to make do without Spaletti, who has taken a year-long sabbatical, so that may well impact on the team’s ability to retain their title.
San Siro sides AC and Inter Milan both failed to secure the level of consistency to challenge Napoli and will be looking to freshen things up.
Stefano Piolo’s Rossoneri side will be without icon Zlatan Ibrahimovic after the legendary Swede opted to call time on his lengthy career, and they will hope to keep hold of their top talents, such as Rafael Leao.
Inter Milan’s failure to make it domestically was countered and mitigated by their strong run to the Champions League final but the Nerazzurri are very much in a similar position to their city rivals.
They, too, will hope to retain their best players, with Argentine forward Lautaro Martinez very much a target for big teams across Europe.
Meanwhile, Juventus have been going through a horrendous period, and a ten-point penalty saw them fall out of the Champions League race, and things are not looking all that bright for Massimiliano Allegri’s side.
However, you can expect the Old Lady of Italian football to rise to the challenge. As for Rome-based sides, Lazio batted above their weight last season, and Jose Mourinho’s future at the Stadio Olimpico is very much tied to just what AS Roma can achieve in 2023/24.
Who’s Down and Who’s New
Sampdoria finished rock bottom and were relegated to Serie B for the first time in over a decade and will be joined by Cremonese. Spezia and Verona will battle it out to avoid a similar fate.
In the other direction, Frosinone and Genoa come back to Serie A with Claudio Ranieri’s Cagliari joining them in the Italian top flight.
Europe Calling
Italian sides did well across European competitions in 2022/23, with Fiorentina and Inter Milan both reaching finals and for 2023/24, you can expect more of the same.
Into the Champions League go Napoli, Lazio, Inter, and AC Milan. Europa League football beckons for Atalanta and Roma, while Juventus have to suffer the relative shame of parking up in the Europa Conference League.
