Poland National Football Team History

Poland played their first official national team match in 1921 when they were narrowly defeated by Hungary in Budapest.

FIFA World Cup History

Their FIFA World Cup record has been, on the whole, fairly sedate aside from a notable period of success occurring in the 70s and early 80s.

The Poland national football team qualified for their first World Cup in 1938, but they didn't make it past the first round.

They didn't qualify again for over 35 years, but when they returned to the top-tier event, they made a big impact.

Peak in the 1970s

At the 1974 World Cup in Germany, the team was coached by Kazimierz Gorski and aided by prolific forward Grzegorz Lato and they impressed in the group stage by beating Argentina, Haiti, and Italy to book their place in the second round, where they beat Sweden and Yugoslavia but a defeat to host Germany meant they had to settle for a place in the third-place play play-off, where they subsequently beat Brazil.

In 1978 they once again went far into the tournament in Argentina before falling at the second group stage with iconic legend Zbigniew Boniek playing a key role. Four years later Poland once again impressed, securing another third-place finish in Spain.

At Mexico '86, the Poland national team once again made it out of the first stage for the fourth tournament in a row but stumbled in the Round of 16, being thumped by Brazil 4-0.

The following three World Cup tournaments saw Poland fail to qualify, and in the four subsequent tournaments they have made it through to – in 2002, 2006, 2018, and 2022 – they have managed just four wins in total.

Poland at the European Championship

The Poland national team haven't had the best of records in the UEFA European Championship, failing to qualify for any tournament between 1960 and 2004.

In 2008 and 2012, they got to the finals tournament but failed to win a single game at either edition.

2016 in France was an entirely different story. Steered by star forward Robert Lewandowski, the Poles got to the quarter-finals before being beaten by Portugal, the eventual champions, via penalties.

2020 brought Poland back down to earth, with the team securing one point from their three group-stage games against Slovakia, Spain and Sweden.

Grzegorz Krychowiak retired from international duty in 2023, having played 100 times for his nation. He previously plied his trade for the likes of Paris Saint-Germain and Sevilla, twice winning the UEFA Europa League with the latter.

Poland National Football Team – Home Stadium

The Polish national team previously played their home games at the Stadion Slaski in Chorzow up until work on the new Stadion Narodowy in Warsaw was completed in 2012.

The stadium has a capacity of 58,580 and, as well as being used by football teams, also plays host to major music events.
