Arsenal vs Newcastle United History

The first-ever meeting between these clubs came in the 1893/94 season of the old Second Division. Newcastle United claimed a resounding 6-0 win at St. James’ Park following a 2-2 draw in the reverse fixture.

Arsenal and Newcastle contested a maiden FA Cup clash in 1901/02. Two years later they shared a pitch in the top flight for the first time, with the Mapgies victorious on both occasions.

Newcastle got the better of Arsenal in the 1952 FA Cup final, two decades after the teams had met on the exact same stage at Wembley Stadium. NUFC were triumphant both times, though the Gunners would take their revenge in the 1998 FA Cup final, in which Arsène Wenger's side claimed a 2-0 win through goals from Marc Overmars and Nicolas Anelka.

Wenger guided Arsenal to three Premier League titles as well as seven FA Cup successes during his 22-year spell in charge of the north London outfit. Newcastle United, meanwhile, have endured a run of more than 65 years without adding silverware to the trophy cabinet at St. James' Park.

The Tyneside club famously battled for the Premier League title in the mid-90s but under owner Mike Ashley the Magpies were relegated twice and were often near the bottom of the Premier League table.

• One of the most famous players to have played for both clubs is Andrew (Andy) Cole. After coming through the ranks at Arsenal, the striker was transferred to Bristol City before going on to bang in the goals at Newcastle.
