The first-ever meeting between these clubs came in the 1893/94 season of the old Second Division. Newcastle United claimed a resounding 6-0 win at St. James’ Park following a 2-2 draw in the reverse fixture.

Arsenal & Newcastle contested a maiden FA Cup clash in 1901/02. Two years later they shared a pitch in the top flight for the first time, with the Mapgies victorious on both occasions.
