Arsenal continue to show progress of late and will hope to make the most of home advantage at the Emirates Stadium, a tough stomping ground for Sheffield United, to secure a positive result, but not for want of trying.

Arsenal vs. Sheffield United History

Sheffield United’s Premier League status has been something of an up-and-down one ever since they appeared in the inaugural season in the re-branded English top tier. Indeed when they secured promotion to the old Division One in 1989, it was the first time they had done so in over a decade.

They’ve suffered relegation a number of times in the past two decades, even slipping down to League One, but are now looking to make the most of their presence among the big boys, and a trip to face Arsenal will be particularly satisfying for their loyal fans.

Arsenal vs. Sheffield United Head to Head

Perhaps the two most iconic matches between Arsenal and Sheffield United have both occurred in FA Cup clashes.

In 1999 the two teams met in the FA Cup fifth round at Highbury, with Patrick Vieira heading home an opener only for Marcelo to level at the start of the second half. Then with 14 minutes left, Lee Morris suffered an injury, and Blades keeper Alan Kelly kicked the ball out, but as Ray Parlour attempted to sportingly throw the ball back to the away side, Nwankwo Kanu took the ball and ran deep into opposition territory before squaring for Marc Overmars to net.

Unsurprisingly, Sheffield United were livid, and Steve Bruce ordered his players off the pitch to a chorus of boos and a six-minute stoppage. The game ran out, and Arsenal won the tie, but Arsene Wenger, recognizing the issue, requested a re-match, which came ten days later.

On this occasion, Stephen Hughes scored the first, and Dennis Bergkamp scored a delightful second before Morris cut the deficit late on, but Arsenal had done enough to win the clash.

The two also met in a famous FA Cup semi-final in April 2003, with Fredrik Ljunberg scoring the only goal of the game, which also saw David Seaman pull off a remarkable save from sub Paul Peschisolido to book a place in the FA Cup Final.

They met in Premier League action in October 2020 at the Emirates Stadium, with Bukayo Saka and Nicolas Pepe netting for Arsenal and David McGoldrick getting a late consolation and to date, Sheffield United have had very little in the way of tangible success on their trips to face Arsenal in North London.
