Arsenal vs Liverpool History

These teams go back more than 130 years, with their first-ever meeting held back in October 1893. Their first clash in the First Division came in the 1905/06 season, with either team winning its home fixture.

The vast majority of matches between Arsenal and Liverpool have come in the English top flight, though they have also faced off in some hugely important cup ties. The Gunners and the Reds have contested the FA Cup final on no fewer than three occasions.

Arsenal were victorious in the 1950 final but didn’t lift the FA Cup again for more than two decades until 1971, when they once again defeated Liverpool at Wembley Stadium. More recently, the Merseyside outfit came out on top in the 2001 FA Cup final as Michael Owen netted twice in the final 10 minutes to hand the Reds a sixth triumph in this competition.

The sides went head-to-head in European competition for the first time in 2008. They met in the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals, with Liverpool earning a 5-3 win on aggregate following a 4-2 victory at Anfield.

Today, Arsenal and Liverpool are two of the biggest and most successful clubs in English football, though league titles have been few and far between for both of them in recent years. The 2023/24 season was the 20th since the Gunners were last crowned Premier League champions, while the Reds only won their first Premier League title in 2020.

On a continental scale, Liverpool are unquestionably the more decorated between the sides. The Merseysiders won Europe’s top prize for a sixth time in 2019. Arsenal, meanwhile, have been chasing down an elusive maiden European title for years. Arsene Wenger’s men came closest in 2006, but they were defeated by FC Barcelona in the UEFA Champions League final.

Several players have been involved with both these teams over the years:

• Nicolas Anelka was just 17 when he moved to Arsenal from Paris Saint-Germain in 1997. The young striker impressed during his time at Highbury, earning his first cap for France before switching to Spanish giants Real Madrid in 1999. Anelka soon returned to boyhood club PSG, from where he joined Liverpool on loan for the second half of the 2001/02 season.
• Arsenal signed Jermaine Pennant, aged 15 at the time, from Notts County in 1999. The winger would make only a handful of appearances for the Gunners, with several loan spells away from the club, before moving to Liverpool in 2006.
• Kolo Touré signed for Arsenal in 2002 and went on to play 326 times for the club, winning one Premier League and two FA Cup titles. After seven years in London, the Ivory Coast defender was acquired by Manchester City and then by Liverpool in 2013. Touré amassed 353 appearances in the Premier League, more than any other African player in the competition’s history.
• Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain became an Arsenal player in 2011, shortly prior to his 18th birthday, joining from Southampton. The midfielder represented the Gunners almost 200 times, earning a £35m transfer to Liverpool in 2017. Oxlade-Chamberlain became a Premier League and UEFA Champions League winner with the Reds before he was released in 2023.

Arsenal and Liverpool have contested more than 240 competitive meetings to date, and there’s been no shortage of goals when these teams have shared a pitch in recent years.

They met on the opening day of the 2016/17 Premier League season, as Jürgen Klopp paid a visit to the Emirates for the first time as Liverpool manager. There were no fewer than seven goals scored on this particular occasion, as the visitors ran out 4-3 winners. Theo Walcott had opened the scoring for the Gunners but Philippe Coutinho, Adam Lallana and Sadio Mané all got in on the act in the second half for the Reds to earn a precious victory in north London.

In 2022/23, this fixture produced a five-goal thriller which saw the hosts come away with a 3-2 win. Gabriel Martinelli netted inside the opening 60 seconds after kick-off, before Bukayo Saka struck twice to earn all 3 points for Mikel Arteta’s men.
