Without a doubt, the most infamous occurrence of this fixture took place on the 24th of April 1988. The two teams met head-on to contest the English League Cup final on that date, and the match was expected to be something of a walk in the park for George Graham’s Arsenal side, but it did not pan out that way.

Diminutive forward Brian Stein had surprisingly given Luton Town the lead at Wembley Stadium, with over 95,000 in attendance, and Ray Harford’s side held on to that lead until the 71st minute when Arsenal sub Martin Hayes leveled.

Just three minutes later, Alan Smith gave Arsenal the lead, and it appeared as if the Gunners were going to win the trophy. Indeed, they could have made the score 3-1 when they were given a spot-kick soon after, but keeper Andy Dibble saved Nigel Winterburn’s effort, and a few minutes later, Danny Wilson equalized for Luton Town and then in the dying seconds, Brian Stein pounced on a Gus Caesar clearance to hand the Hatters a famous win and their first ever major trophy.

Over the course of the following four seasons, Arsenal got some measure of revenge by winning each of the home matches against Luton Town, with the latest of these coming in August 1991 when goals from Paul Merson and Alan Smith secured a 2-0 win.

Luton Town were relegated that season and therefore missed out on being in the inaugural Premier League season and then fell as low as the Conference before bouncing back.
