Denmark secured their spot at the Euro 2024 finals tournament by topping their qualifying group, courtesy of their head-to-head record against Slovenia.

The Danes had a fairly straightforward task at hand, in a qualifying group which also contained Finland, Kazakhstan, Northern Ireland and San Marino.

The team's highest scorer during qualifiers was striker Rasmus Højlund with seven goals.

Denmark National Team History

The Danish national team have a fairly successful history when it comes to the UEFA European Championship, with their obvious highlight coming in 1992 when they shocked Europe by winning the competition.

Interestingly, the Danish Women's team are equally adept when it comes to European competition, regularly finishing in the latter stages of the Euros, albeit in Euro 2022, they failed to get out of their group.

Euro Finals Debut

The Danes played their first Euro finals tournament in 1964 but lost both games in Spain and didn't return to the same stage until 1984 when they made a big impact in France.

Star-Studded Semi-Finalists

Sepp Piontek's star-studded squad for the competition included Jesper Olsen, Preben Elkjaer, Jan Molby, and Michael Laudrup, and though they started with an opening game defeat to the hosts, they bounced back to beat both Yugoslavia and Belgium to book progress to the knockout stages.

Here they were unfortunate to lose to Spain on penalties in Lyon after a cagey 1-1 draw.

1988 saw Denmark knocked out in the group stage in Germany, but in Sweden, they roared to an unlikely triumph.

Unlikely Success in 92

Denmark hadn't even qualified for the finals, but when war broke out in the former Yugoslavia, Denmark were awarded a place in the finals, and they didn't look back.

They qualified ahead of France and England to get out of Group 1 and then secured a memorable draw with the Netherlands, the reigning title holders at the time, before winning the semi-final on penalties.

They went into the final against Germany as big underdogs due to the fact that their opponents were one of the best teams in the world at the time, but goals from John Jensen and Kim Vilfort gave the Danes the title.

Denmark were regularly involved in European Championship finals between 1996 and 2020 without making a massive impact, but at the delayed Euro 2020 tournament, they battled against the odds to once again achieve great success.

Against the Odds

In their first match of the finals, they lost to Finland in a game that saw playmaker Christian Eriksen suffer a cardiac arrest on the field of play; the Danes managed to regroup and they got all the way to the semi-finals, where they were finally beaten by England at Wembley Stadium.
