Turkey and Portugal at the UEFA European Championship
Turkey haven’t achieved a great deal at the UEFA European Championship. The 2024 tournament will be just the sixth occasion Ay-Yıldızlılar partake in the continental showpiece.
In 2008, the southeastern European nation progressed beyond the last-eight for the first time but exited to eventual runners-up Germany in the semi-finals.
Conversely, Portugal have previously tasted success in this competition. In 2016, they were fortunate to advance from the group phase, having finished 3rd behind Hungary and Iceland.
The Portuguese subsequently defeated Croatia, Poland and Wales in the knockouts before narrowly beating home favourites France in the final.
Going further back, A Seleção reached the semi-finals on their first appearance at the Euro finals in 1984. Two decades later, they ended runners-up to Greece at Euro 2004.
Portugal also made the last-four in 2000 and 2012, losing to the eventual champions (France and Spain) on either occasion.
Turkey vs Portugal Head-to-Head
Ahead of the Euro 2024 finals, Turkey and Portugal have contested nine competitive matches but only a chunk of these have occurred at the finals of a major tournament.
The teams shared a group at Euro 1996, held in England, as the Portuguese claimed a 1-0 win over Turkey at The City Ground.
Four years later, Turkey and Portugal met in the quarter-finals. Nuno Gomes scored twice in a 2-0 victory and Luis Figo was also an integral component as Portugal advanced to the UEFA Euro semi-finals, only to lose to eventual champions France.
Turkey and Portugal also shared a pitch at Euro 2008, again during the group stage. Pepe and Raul Meireles were on the scoresheet in another successful outing for A Seleção. Unfortunately, Cristiano Ronaldo and co. ultimately crashed out to Germany in the quarter-finals.
Most recently. Turkey faced Portugal in the qualifying play-offs for the 2022 FIFA World Cup; Portugal earned a 3-1 win to confirm their participation at the spectacle held in Qatar.
