Turkey vs Germany History
Germany have a long and storied history in the UEFA European Championship, and no team has played in the final of this tournament more times than Die Mannschaft. West Germany triumphed on its first appearance at the Euros in 1972 before capturing a second title eight years later. Following the reunification of Germany in the early 1990s, the country added a third European success in 1996.
It hasn't been as bright and rosy for the Germans in the 21st century. Euro 2004 saw Die Mannschaft suffer a group-stage exit at back-to-back Euro tournaments, ending winless at both events. Germany then ended runners-up to Spain in 2008 and reached the semi-finals at each of the next two editions.
Turkey debuted at this competition in 1996, though a disappointing display meant Ay-Yıldızlılar finished winless and bottom of their group. Turkey fared better at Euro 2000 and progressed to the knockouts but lost out to Portugal in the quarter-finals.
Euro 2008 remains Turkey's best result at the continental showpiece. Ay-Yıldızlılar reached the quarter-finals and subsequently defeated Croatia, on penalties, to reach the semis for the very first time. Turkey came close to beating Germany but were left heartbroken by a late goal by Philipp Lahm. Turkey failed to advance from the group in 2016 and again at Euro 2020, winning just one of a combined six games.

Several of the previous meetings between these teams have come in the form of qualifiers or international friendlies, though they did clash at the Euro 2008 finals. Germany edged this semi-final tie thanks to Philipp Lahm's winning goal in the closing minutes. Bastian Schweinsteiger and Miroslav Klose were also on the scoresheet though Die Mannschaft went on to lose to Spain in the final.
The sides contested a friendly in November 2023 with Turkey running out 3-2 winners on this occasion, despite trailing for much of the game. Kai Havertz and Nicklas Fullkrug found the back of the net for Germany, but Yusuf Sari's second-half penalty proved to be the difference between the teams at the Olympiastadion Berlin.
