Denmark vs Poland UEFA Euros Tournament Record

Denmark remarkably won the UEFA European Championships in 1992, despite having not qualified to compete in that edition of the tournament, which goes some way to show how capable the Danes have been in the competition.

1964 was the first time that Denmark made it to the finals of the tournament, and they finished fourth, albeit that being out of four teams competing at that stage of the competition.

In 1984, their very attack-minded side performed admirably to reach the Semi-Finals of the competition before losing to Spain on penalties.

1992 saw the Danish Dynamite fail to get into the competition on merit, but when war broke out in the Balkans, UEFA disqualified Yugoslavia, which then led to their late inclusion, and Richard Moller Nielsen’s side made the most of this second chance.

They drew their opener with England before losing to hosts Sweden, and that meant they needed to beat France to be sure of making progress, and they did just that when Henrik Larsen and Lars Elstrup scored in a 2-1 win in Malmo.

In the Semi-Finals, they battled to a 2-2 draw with a very strong Dutch side before advancing on penalties to then meet Germany in the UEFA European Championship Final.

Denmark went into the game as the underdogs but played Germany off the park and scored on either side of half-time, with John Jensen scoring after 18 minutes and Kim Vilfort getting a second with 12 minutes left to play in Gothenburg.

That success was, unsurprisingly, something of a one-off, but it is worth noting that they have also enjoyed other successful runs in the competition.

At Euro 2004, they reached the Quarter-Finals before being beaten by the Czech Republic in Porto, and at the delayed Euro 2020 finals, they lost to England in the Semi-Finals at Wembley Stadium.

Poland have reached the UEFA European Championship finals on four occasions, the first of which came at Euro 2008 when they secured just a single point from their group phase games.

Four years later, they co-hosted the tournament with Ukraine but again failed to win a single group game and were eliminated.

Euro 2016 saw the Poles get all the way to the Quarter-Finals, where they took an early lead through Bayern Munich forward Robert Lewandowski but lost to the eventual winners, Portugal, on penalties.

Denmark vs Poland Head-to-Head

Denmark and Poland have never previously met in a UEFA European Championship match and overall have only met in four competitive matches.

In the qualifying campaign for the 1978 FIFA World Cup, Denmark lost to Poland on two occasions, and they were once again drawn into the same group in the qualifying phase for the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

The first of those games took place in Warsaw, and Lewandowski scored a hat-trick in an exciting 3-2 win, and in the return in Copenhagen, the Danes got their revenge with a comfortable 4-0 thumping. Both teams ended up making it to the finals in Russia for the finals of that tournament.
