Denmark vs Romania UEFA Euros Tournament Record

As of 2023, Denmark have competed in nine UEFA European Championship Finals, and though they have suffered group-stage exits on four occasions, they have also experienced incredible tangible success in the competition.

Their first finals appearance came in 1964 when they finished fourth of four, and twenty years later; they did well to reach the Semi-Finals in France before being beaten by Spain after penalties.

The tournament didn’t start so well, and the Danes were left having to beat France in their final game to guarantee progress, and that’s a result they secured thanks to a Lars Elstrup winner in Malmo.

Next, they faced reigning champions the Netherlands in the Semi-Final, and they battled to a 2-2 draw before the game went to spot-kicks. Marco van Basten was the only player to miss from the ten penalties, and as such, the Danish side moved on to face Germany in the final.

Though they were undoubtedly the underdogs, Denmark eased to victory thanks to goals from John Jensen and Kim Vilfort in Gothenburg.

At Euro 2020, they reached the Semi-Finals before losing to England thanks to an extra time winner from Harry Kane.

Romania’s record in the tournament is a little less glorious. In four of the five finals tournaments that Tricolorii have qualified for the finals, they’ve been dumped out at the first hurdle, failing to win a single game in the process.

The only exception to this run of poor form came at Euro 2000 when they secured a famous last-gasp win over England in Charleroi, securing a path to the Quarter-Finals as a result. In their last eight clash, Romania were undone by an Italian side that would go on to reach the final.

Denmark vs Romania Head-to-Head

Denmark and Romania have met in two previous UEFA European Championship tournaments, both coming in the qualifying phase.

The first was ahead of the 1976 finals and saw the two sides play out a goalless draw in Denmark before Romania thrashed the Danes 6-1 at home; regardless of that result, neither team made it to the finals in the former Yugoslavia.

The second campaign that saw the two clash was in the qualifying for Euro 2004. Goals from former Chelsea forward Adrian Mutu and Dorinel Munteanu put Romania 2-1 ahead just after the break, but Denmark roared back to win 5-2 in Bucharest, thanks chiefly to a double from winger Dennis Rommedahl.

The return fixture in Copenhagen finished 2-2, with Martin Laursen scoring a late equalizer, with the Danes subsequently getting to the finals in Portugal while Romania missed out.
