Both of these clubs were founded soon after the start of the 20th century, first Bayern Munich in 1900 and then Real Madrid two years later. It was the Spanish side which first put its name on the map regarding success in Europe. Los Blancos won the European Cup, the forerunner to today’s UEFA Champions League, in each of the first five seasons it ran, before collecting a sixth title in 1965/66.
It took Bayern Munich a little longer to get settled in the competition, but when they did, they did so in style. Their first win came in 1973/74 when Udo Lattek’s side – comprising stars such as captain Franz Beckenbauer, wide-man Uli Hoeness, and goal machine Gerd Müller – thumped Atletico Madrid 4-0 after drawing their initial clash in Brussels.
The following season, with Dettmar Cramer now in charge, Bayern made it back-to-back successes when they beat Leeds United 2-0 with Müller once again on target, having also netted against Atletico. The Bavarians subsequently made it a hat-trick of European Cup titles with a narrow 1-0 win over Saint-Etienne in Glasgow. Bayern would then taste defeat in two finals in the 1980s, first to Aston Villa in 1981 and then against FC Porto in 1987, with the German side expected to win on both occasions.
Real Madrid, meanwhile, entered a 30-year spell without capturing this prestigious trophy, which they eventually brought to an end in 1998 when they beat Juventus in the final. The following season, Bayern Munich somehow contrived to lose to Manchester United in the Champions League Final, despite being in the lead when the game entered injury time. Die Roten conceded twice in three minutes to taste a very humbling defeat at the Camp Nou.
2001 saw the Bundesliga side win their first UEFA Champions League title, beating Valencia on penalties. They subsequently won two more titles, in 2013 against Bundesliga rivals Borussia Dortmund at Wembley Stadium, and then in 2020 versus Paris Saint-Germain.
Real Madrid matched Bayern’s run of three successive European titles when Zinedine Zidane coached the team to a three-peat from 2016-18. Los Blancos saw off Atletico Madrid, Juventus and Liverpool in the respective finals, taking their tally of European Cup / Champions League crowns to 14.
These teams met as many as four times during the 1999/00 Champions League alone, twice in the group stage and then twice more in the semi-finals. Bayern were victorious at the Bernabéu in the group stage, but it was Real Madrid that triumphed in the last-four, 3-2 on aggregate, on their way to beating Valencia in the final.
The following season, the teams once again clashed in the Champions League semi-finals. This time the Bavarians came out on top, 3-1 on aggregate, and went on to lift the trophy for the first time since 1976.
The teams reconvened in the Champions League semi-finals in 2012. The tie ended 3-3 after two legs, with either side winning 2-1 at home, and had to be decided from the penalty spot. Bayern won the shootout, 4-3, after Cristiano Ronaldo, Kaká and Sergio Ramos all failed to convert from 12 yards. However, Die Roten would ultimately lose to Chelsea in the final.
Real Madrid took revenge when these teams met two years later, again in the UCL semi-finals. Los Blancos claimed a narrow 1-0 victory at the Santiago Bernabéu, with close to 80,000 people in attendance, before running riot in a 4-0 success at the Allianz Arena.
That wouldn't be the last time Real Madrid and Bayern contest a Champions League semi-final tie. The Spanish giants ran out 4-3 winners on aggregate, with Karim Benzema scoring both of their goals in a 2-2 draw at the Bernabéu. RMCF went on to defeat Liverpool in the final, capturing a record-extending 13th European title.
Real Madrid and Bayern reconvened in the 2023/24 Champions League campaign, yet again at the semi-final stage. The latter earned a narrow 3-2 aggregate victory over Arsenal, while Los Blancos had overcome defending champions Manchester City, on penalties, to reach the last-four.
Cristiano Ronaldo scored nine goals in eight matches versus Bayern. He netted twice in the 2011/12 UCL semi-final 2nd leg, and repeated this feat in the 2013/14 season. The Portugal talisman stole the show when Real Madrid met Bayern in the 2016/17 Champions League quarter-finals, with a brace at the Allianz Arena followed by a hat-trick in the return leg at the Bernabéu.
These are a few of the world-class pros who can say they've represented both of these esteemed clubs:
Arjen Robben joined Bayern from Real Madrid in 2009 and he went on to play more than 300 times for the German side. The Netherlands winger scored the winning goal for Bayern in the 2013 Champions League final against Borussia Dortmund.
Xabi Alonso enjoyed five seasons at Real Madrid until moving to Bayern in 2014. The ex-Spain midfielder spent the final three years of his playing career in southeast Germany before pursuing work in coaching.
Toni Kroos was signed to the Bayern youth teams in 2006 and made his debut for the senior team the following year, aged 17 at the time. He garnered more than 200 first-team appearances before transferring to Real Madrid in 2014, shortly after capturing World Cup glory with Germany. Kroos has racked up more than 450 outings in Real Madrid colours, winning multiple La Liga and Champions League titles.
James Rodríguez also earned a move to Real Madrid in the summer of 2014 after lighting up the preceding FIFA World Cup with his individual performances. James fell out of favour with new coach Zinedine Zidane and subsequently switched to Bayern on a two-year loan. The Colombia midfielder won two league titles apiece with Bayern and Real Madrid.
Carlo Ancelotti has taken charge of both these European juggernauts. He was Bayern manager for the 2016/17 season, sandwiched by two separate spells at the helm of as Real Madrid.
