Real Madrid are the undisputed kings of European football. Their 14 European Cup and UEFA Champions League titles put them head and shoulders above the rest, and their recent form in the competition is evidence of their dominance in this arena.

Their success in the competition acts as something of a pair of bookends to the competition itself. They whirled into action from the very inception of the European Cup, winning each of the first five editions of the tournament.

The most famous of those victories came in 1960 when they faced Eintracht Frankfurt in Glasgow. The German side had the temerity to open the scoring but were soon put to the sword in stunning fashion.

Alfredo Di Stefano scored three times, and Ference Puskas netted four, with Miguel Munoz’s side easing to a thumping 7-3 win.

At the other end of the chronological spectrum comes the club’s five title triumphs between 2014 and 2022, the first four of which were, of course, inspired by a certain player by the name of Cristiano Ronaldo.

For a team that has won so many titles, twice as many as the next most successful team, it would be easy to forget the 32 years where they failed to do so. That particular drought came to an end in 1998 with a victory over Juventus.

Their opponents Newcastle United, in marked contrast, are not that experienced in this particular European competition. Their first foray came in 1997/98 when they found themselves in something of a group of death alongside FC Barcelona, PSV Eindhoven, and Dynamo Kyiv.

Sir Kenny Dalglish’s side started the group phase with a memorable 3-2 win over Barcelona, with Colombian folk hero Faustino Asprilla scoring a hat-trick at St James’ Park and a draw away in Ukraine certainly set them up nicely.

Two losses to PSV Eindhoven followed before the Magpies went down 1-0 in the Camp Nou before they finished the stage with a 2-0 win over Kyiv and therefore finished third in the group and were eliminated.

Sir Bobby Robson took the club back into the competition in 2002/03, and a fine late win over Feyenoord saw them qualify for the second group phase, where they beat Bayer Leverkusen twice but were knocked out.

2022/23’s top-four finish from Eddie Howe, well-backed by new owners, saw the club return to the UEFA Champions League after a twenty-year wait, and the club’s loyal fanbase will be desperate to see their team in action across the continent.

Another star to wear both shirts is England international Michael Owen. The prolific forward made a massive impact at Liverpool, breaking into the first team as a teenager and going on to score 158 goals in 297 games before moving to Real Madrid.

Owen spent just one season in Madrid, scoring 16 goals in 45 games, though it’s worth noting that 19 of those were coming from the bench.

He then completed something of a surprise big-money move to the north-east of England, where he spent four injury-plagued seasons with Newcastle United. During this time, he scored 30 goals in 79 games, and in the final season with the club, they were relegated from the Premier League, leading to Owen moving to Manchester United in 2009.
