Real Madrid and Napoli are two massive European clubs who have enjoyed starkly different levels of success on the international stage.

Los Blancos are far and away the most successful club in the history of the European Cup, winning the trophy on no fewer than 14 occasions. Meanwhile, Napoli must look back to the days of Diego Maradona to recount their one European trophy.

Real Madrid are arguably the most iconic football club in the world. Between 2014 and 2022, Los Blancos won the UEFA Champions League on five separate occasions. As well as their success on the continent, no club has won more La Liga titles (35) than the great Real Madrid.

SSC Napoli have an incredibly passionate fanbase, but their Italian fans have barely enjoyed a fraction of Real Madrid's success in European competitions. Their only trophy came during Maradona's era, winning the UEFA Cup in the 1988/89 season.

In the 2022/23 season, Napoli enjoyed a return to the glory days. They won their third Scudetto - their first since 1989/90 - beating their rivals to the title with ease. In the same season, they also recorded their best ever performance in the UEFA Champions League, losing to AC Milan in the quarter-finals after thrashing both Liverpool and Ajax.

Real Madrid vs Napoli Head to Head

Real Madrid and Napoli were drawn together in Group C of the 2023/24 UEFA Champions League group stage. Prior to these two meetings, Real Madrid and Napoli had faced off on four occasions in competitive matches.

The Italian club failed to record a victory in each of these four matches, losing three and drawing one. They met in the 2016/17 Champions League Last 16. An impressive Real Madrid side, captained by Sergio Ramos, won both legs 3-1 and would go on to win the tournament.

Real Madrid vs Napoli Connections

Gonzalo Higuain is one of four top class players that have played in both the sky blue of Napoli and the white of Real Madrid. The Argentine striker had an impressive goalscoring record at both clubs.

Legendary Italian centre-back Fabio Cannavaro started his career in his birthtown of Naples and starred for Napoli in the early 90’s. He spent three seasons at Real Madrid between 2006-2009, winning two La Liga titles.

Another player to have featured for both clubs is Spanish forward Jose Callejon. He came through the Real Madrid youth academy, making 55 La Liga appearances in Madrid colours before signing for Napoli. He spent seven years in Naples, playing more than 300 games for the club.

Spanish centre-back Raúl Albiol also played regular football in Madrid and Naples, while Carlo Ancelotti and Rafa Benitez have spent time as the head coach at both clubs.
