Real Madrid have been mostly ever-present in UEFA's flagship tournament, taking part in every edition of the Champions League from 1996/97 until 2024/25. With 14 titles to their name, double the tally of their nearest rivals in that respect (AC Milan being on seven), there's no dounting supporters of Los Blancos will be unimpressed by anything other than a run to the latter stages of the Champions League.
RMCF won the first five editions of the European Cup, with superstars such as Alfredo di Stéfano and Ferenc Puskás being key to their successes, and their haul of six titles in the first ten years of the competition immediately placed Real Madrid in a class above the rest. Between their 1966 success against Partizan Belgrade and their victory over Juventus in 1998, Real Madrid reached the final just once, losing to Liverpool in 1981, a run that sorely tested the patience of the La Liga giants.
They made up for lost time by winning three times in five years but then had to wait another decade to once again dominate European football. Zinedine Zidane, a former player of the club, took charge of the team, in his first spell, between January 2016 and May 2018, taking Real Madrid to three successive titles. Carlo Ancelotti returned to the club in June 2021 and the Italian tactician duly won his second UCL title as Real Madrid boss, having earlier achieved success with Los Blancos in 2014.
Borussia Dortmund, famed for their immense support, have not been quite so successful on the European scene. They first entered the competition in 1956/57, getting knocked out by Manchester United in the First Round, and were beaten semi-finalists in 1963/64, but did not qualify all that many times for the competition in its European Cup era.
BVB have fared better in the Champions League era, reaching the quarter-finals in 1995/96, in what was their first campaign in the rebranded tournament. The following season, under coach Ottmar Hitzfeld, Dortmund beat Manchester United in the semi-finals to set up a final against Juventus in the city of Munich, a game in which the German outfit wasn't favourites to win.
They got off to a flying start, with Karl-Heinz Riedle scoring twice in the first half before Alessandro Del Piero pulled a goal back for Juve in the second half. Substitute Lars Ricken then scored a stylish chip to hand Borussia Dortmund a maiden European title.
BVB returned to the Champions League final in 2013, facing Bundesliga rivals Bayern Munich at Wembley. Arjen Robben netted the winning goal in the closing stages, a dagger to the hearts of Jürgen Klopp's side and their loyal supporters.
Another 11 years passed before Dortmund once again secured a berth to the Champions League final in the 2023/24 campaign. Die Borussen overcame Paris Saint-Germain, 2-0 on aggregate, in the semi-finals to earn a date with Real Madrid at Wembley Stadium.
These clubs have met several times in the UEFA Champions League, with Real Madrid claiming victory more often than not. In 2012/13 the two sides met as many as four times, first in the group stage and then in the semi-finals. Robert Lewandowski netted four times in the semi-final first leg, guiding Dortmund to a 4-3 aggregate win and sending BVB to the final at Wembley.
The following year saw Real Madrid strike revenge over Dortmund when the teams clashed in the UCL quarter-finals. Los Blancos won 3-2 over two legs on their way to defeating city rivals Atletico Madrid in the final.
Only in 2024 would Real Madrid and Dortmund once again share a pitch in the knockout phase of the Champions League. The Spanish giants edged past Bayern Munich in the semi-finals to set a date with BVB in the Champions League final at Wembley.
In terms of stars who have lined up for both Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund, a few players have done so. These include former Turkish international Nuri Sahin and talented Moroccan full-back Achraf Hakimi.
The most prominent example, though, would have to be Jude Bellingham. The England midfielder was aged 20 when he completed a £100m move from Dortmund to Madrid and subsequently set Spanish football alight with his immense talent and maturity.
