With 14 titles to their name, Los Blancos are rightfully considered the most successful side in the history of Europe’s showpiece club competition. No one even comes close in terms of historical successes in the European Cup and its successor, the UEFA Champions League, and the club’s massive global fanbase is always irresistibly drawn to the Santiago Bernabeu on match day.

Well, Real Madrid are next to unstoppable in the history of the competition, and they’ve appeared in every edition of the competition from 1997/98 to 2023/24, and more often than not, they’ve lasted long into the knockout phase.
UEFA formed the original European Cup in 1955, and Real Madrid won every one of the first five competitions played, with the likes of Alfredo Di Stefano and Ferenc Puskas being the stars of their all-conquering side of that era.
Their run of form was rudely brought to an end by arch-rivals Barcelona, who knocked them out in the First Round of the 1960/61 season. In 1962 and 1964, Real Madrid lost finals to Benfica and Internazionale, respectively, but bounced back to clinch their sixth success in 1966, beating Partizan Belgrade in Brussels.
It wasn’t until 1981 that they returned to the final of the competition, and on that occasion, it was Liverpool that downed them at the Parc des Princes in Paris, with Alan Kennedy scoring the only goal of the game.
Between 1998 and 2002, three more wins were secured, with Vicente del Bosque guiding the team for the final two of that treble of successes.
Real Madrid had to wait another decade to taste a title triumph but then made up for lost time with their second period of total dominance. Between 2014 and 2018, the Spanish giants won four UEFA Champions League trophies, with Zinedine Zidane being in charge for a run of three wins in three seasons.
Carlo Ancelotti returned to the club to help them win their 14th title in 2021/21, that coming against Liverpooll, with Vinicius Jr scoring the game’s only goal.
Celtic have experienced real highs in the competition as well, albeit these coming in the somewhat distant past. In 1966/67, they became the first British side to win the European Cup when they beat Inter Milan in Lisbon.
The nucleus of that team then reached the final in 1970 but lost to Dutch side Feyenoord after extra time. 1971/72 and 1973/74 saw the Scottish team reach the Semi-Finals, but from then onwards, things have been something of a struggle for the Bhoys.
In recent seasons, they’ve regularly qualified for the tournament, and their main aim has been to get through preliminary rounds before bedding in over the group phase, which they’ve rarely secured safe passage through.
Real Madrid and Celtic have met in two previous European campaigns. In 1979/80, they were drawn together in the Quarter-Finals of the European Cup, and Billy McNeil’s side roared to an impressive 2-0 win in Glasgow, but in front of 110,000 fans at the Santiago Bernabeu, they crumbled to a 3-0 defeat and were duly knocked out.
Their other match-up was in the 2022/23 UEFA Champions League group stage, where Real Madrid won in Scotland 3-0 thanks to goals from Vinicius Junior, Luka Modric, and Eden Hazard, all of which came in the second half.
Things didn’t get better for Celtic in Spain, where they lost 5-1, with Portuguese sub Jota scoring a consolation goal with six minutes left to play after Modric, Rodrygo, Marco Asensio, Vinicius, and Federico Valverde had all scored for Ancelotti’s side.
In terms of players who have turned out for both teams, one example of this rare feat is Danish midfielder Thomas Gravesen. The Former Everton man moved to Real Madrid in something of a surprise transfer in January 2005, and he made 49 appearances for the club before he moved to Celtic in 2006.
He spent just one season at Celtic Park, making 29 appearances and scoring six goals, and helped the club to secure a Scottish Premiership and Scottish Cup double in the process.
