The two competitors in this fixture are among the biggest and most decorated clubs across the European continent. It’s because of teams such as Bayern Munich and Real Madrid that the UEFA Champions League maintains such appeal. The competition continues to go from strength to strength, with the German and Spanish behemoths being vital cogs in the UEFA wheel.
In the early years of the European Cup, Real Madrid boasted stars such as Alfredo di Stéfano and Ferenc Puskás who boosted Los Blancos to win each of the first five editions of the competition. RMCF added a sixth title to its collection in 1966. After taking a while to get going in Europe, Bayern Munich lifted the European Cup for the first time in 1974 and then retained the trophy twice.
Both Bayern and Real Madrid endured a duck in which neither of them lifted this trophy between 1977 and 1998. The competition had rebranded to the Champions League in the early 90s and Real Madrid became the first of these two teams to capture UCL glory, doing so in 1998. The following year Bayern were on the cusp of achieving this feat, but remarkably conceded twice to Manchester United in stoppage time at the Camp Nou. Real Madrid reclaimed the European throne in 2000, before Bayern finally lifted this famous trophy again the very next season.
The Bavarians pipped Bundesliga rivals Borussia Dortmund in the 2013 Champions League final, one year after an agonising defeat to Chelsea, and three after losing to José Mourinho's Inter Milan. Real Madrid then embarked on a hot streak in which Los Blancos were Champions League winners four times in the space of five years. Victories over Atletico Madrid (twice), Juventus and Liverpool saw RMCF take its record Cup-winning tally to 13.
That became 14 in 2022, as Carlo Ancelotti's side edged Liverpool, 1-0, at the Stade de France. This was two years after Bayern had collected a sixth European crown, beating Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Champions League final.
These two teams are well known to each other, having faced off in European competition on a number of occasions. The first time they did so was in 1976, when the met in the European Cup semi-finals. The German side ran out 3-1 winners on aggregate, on route to winning the title for a third year in succession.
Bayern and Real Madrid locked horns in another semi-final, in the 1986/87 season, as the Bavarians triumphed 4-2 on aggregate. This time, however, they lost to FC Porto in the final. A year later, Real Madrid gained revenge and beat Bayern 4-3 in the European Cup quarter-finals before they surprisingly lost to PSV Eindhoven in the next round.
Their first time Bayern and Real Madrid clashed in the UEFA Champions League era was in the 1999/00 campaign. The teams shared a pitch no fewer than four times in this season alone, twice in the group stage and twice more in the semi-finals. Despite losing home and away to Bayern in the group phase, Los Blancos emerged victorious in the semi-finals, 3-2 on aggregate, before defeating domestic rivals Valencia in the final.
The very next season Bayern faced Real Madrid in the Champions League semi-finals once again. The Bundesliga outfit won 3-1 on aggregate, with Giovane Élber scoring in both games, to see them through to the final in which they captured a fourth European title.
Bayern Munich beat Real Madrid en route to the 2012 final, and Real Madrid did likewise two years later. In 2016/17, Real Madrid thumped Bayern Munich 6-3 on aggregate in the quarter-finals, albeit the final three of those goals all came in a frantic extra-time period at the Santiago Bernabéu, with Cristiano Ronaldo completing a memorable hat-trick that evening.
The 2017/18 season saw yet another knockout stage fixture between these two teams. This semi-final tie was won by Real Madrid, 4-3 on aggregate, as Zinedine Zidane’s side then went on to overcome Liverpool in the UEFA Champions League final that season.
More recently, in 2024, Bayern Munich and Real Madrid were drawn together in the Champions League semi-finals yet again. Los Blancos edged defending champions Manchester City, on penalties, in the quarter-finals while Bayern scraped past Arsenal.
Perhaps no player has been as influential in this fixture as Cristiano Ronaldo was in his eight matches versus Bayern. The former Real Madrid man netted twice in the 2011/12 Champions League semi-final 2nd leg, and did likewise again in the 2013/14 season. Ronaldo scored five past Bayern in the 2016/17 Champions League quarter-finals, with two at the Allianz Arena followed by a hat-trick at the Santiago Bernabéu.
These players had the honour to represent both of these clubs:
Arjen Robben played more than 300 times for Bayern Munich after joining from Real Madrid in 2009. He became a key player for the Bavarian giants and scored the all-important goal in the 2013 Champions League final against Borussia Dortmund.
The two clubs traded midfielders in the summer of 2014, with Xabi Alonso moving from Real Madrid to Bayern and Toni Kroos in the opposite direction. Kroos has been a major success in the Spanish capital, amassing more than 450 appearances for Los Blancos in addition to several pieces of silverware such as La Liga and Champions League titles.
James Rodríguez became a Real Madrid player following his performances at the 2014 FIFA World Cup. The Colombia midfielder switched to Bayern on a two-year loan deal in 2017 and he won two league titles apiece with these teams.
Although not as a player, Carlo Ancelotti has of course represented both of these European juggernauts. He had two stints in charge of Real Madrid, sandwiching his lone season with Bayern as well as spells with Napoli and Everton.
