With a collected total of 20 final appearances between them, Bayern Munich and Juventus are without a doubt two of the most iconic and successful teams in the history of both the European Cup and its much-vaunted successor, the UEFA Champions League.

Juventus, too have a strong and committed following, with the Turin club known for creating a vibrant atmosphere both home and away.

Bayern Munich’s success rate in the competition is some way ahead of their Italian opponents, and they certainly made a big impact on the competition in the 1970s.

During their most dominant era, the mid-1970s, they won the European Cup on three successive occasions, beating Atletico Madrid, Leeds United, and Saint-Etienne on the way, but they then had to wait another quarter of a century to add to those titles.

Die Bayern may well have won their first three European Cup finals, but they also then managed to lose their next three. Those came in 1982, 1987, and in the UEFA Champions League in 1999.

Each of those defeats was painful in their own way. The loss to Aston Villa in 1982 was an unexpected one but not as unexpected as their 2-1 defeat at the hands of FC Porto in Vienna in 1987. Their defeat to Manchester United in 1999 was, however, surely the worst of the lot.

Ottmar Hitzfeld’s side were 1-0 ahead for most of the match, only to then concede two goals in injury time, in a game that Sir Alex Ferguson’s side had not impressed at all, up until their memorable comeback.

In 2001 they ended their long-awaited run for a fourth title, beating Valencia on penalties in order to do so. However, they lost finals to both Inter Milan and Chelsea before completing successes in 2013 and 2020 against Borussia Dortmund and Paris Saint-Germain.

Juventus won their first top-tier European crown in 1985 when they beat Liverpool in Brussels in a game that is sadly more remembered for the Heysel Stadium disaster.

Just over a decade later, the Serie A side won the UEFA Champions League when they beat Ajax in Rome via penalties after a 1-1 draw.

Incredibly, as of 2023, La Vecchia Signora (The Old Lady) of Italian football have lost seven European Cup/UEFA Champions League finals.

1973 was the first of these defeats at the hands of an Ajax side jam-packed with legends, including Johan Cruyff, Johan Neeskens, Johnny Rep, and Arie Haan. 89,000 fans packed into the Red Star Stadium in Belgrade to see Rep’s goal hand the Dutch side their third successive European Cup title.

A decade later, they lost out to SV Hamburger in Athens. There then followed a run of five UEFA Champions League Finals in a row that the Italian giants contrived to lose.

In 1997 that defeat came at the hands of Borussia Dortmund, and a year later, Real Madrid beat them 1-0 in Amsterdam. In 2003 they were beaten on penalties by AC Milan after a particularly dull goalless draw at Old Trafford.

In 2015 it was Barcelona’s turn to see off their challenge, and two years later, fellow La Liga outfit Real Madrid repeated the feat.

Bayern Munich vs Juventus FC Head-to-Head

These two teams are well-known to each other in terms of their competitive European meetings. The first of these came in the group stage of the 2004/05 UEFA Champions League.

Both games were won by Juventus by a single goal, Pavel Nedved netting in Turin and Alessandro Del Piero going so in Munich.

The following season they met again in the same stage; this time, Bayern Munich picked up their first win against Juventus, with goals from Sebastian Deisler and Martin Demichelis scoring in a 2-1 win. In the return fixture, David Trezeguet scored twice to give the Italian side all three points.

The first occasion these sides met in the knockout phase came in the 2012/12 season in the Quarter-Final stage. In the first leg at the Allianz Arena, Austrian star David Alaba scored within a minute, and Thomas Muller completed a 2-0 victory just after the hour.

Goals from Mario Mandzukic and Claudio Pizarro gave the German side another 2-0 win at the Delle Alpi to complete an easy 4-0 aggregate success en route to winning the tournament that season.

2015/16 resulted in another knockout phase win for Bayern Munich, this time in the Round of 16. The first leg at the Juventus Stadium finished 2-2, and Massimiliano Allegri will have thought his side were set to qualify after they rushed into a 2-0 lead after just 28 minutes in Munich.

However, Bayern had other ideas. Robert Lewandowski reduced the arrears after 73 minutes, and then Thomas Muller scored a 90th-minute equalizer to send the game into extra-time. That period saw both Thiago and Kingsley Coman net for the home side to complete a fabulous comeback.
