That loss was hard to take, but in 2012, they suffered arguably as big a heartache. They faced Chelsea that year, and the final actually took place in their Allianz Arena home. The home side took the lead on 83 minutes when Thomas Muller headed in an opener.

They looked set to clinch the win before Didier Drogba equalized on 88 minutes, and the game went to penalties with Juan Mata saw his effort saved by Manuel Neuer to put Bayern Munich in a dominant position.

However, they were to be denied after both Ivica Olic, who had come on as a sub in extra time, and Bastian Schweinsteiger saw their penalties saved by Petr Cech, leading to Drogba scoring the crucial fifth Chelsea effort to give Roberto Di Matteo’s side the win.

Newcastle United’s involvement in the UEFA Champions League has been minimal; indeed, up to 2023/24, the St James’ Park side had only qualified for the competition on three occasions, and in one of those, they failed to get through the preliminary rounds.

In both 1997/98 and 2002/03, they did, however, secure memorable wins in the group stages, beating FC Barcelona 3-2 in their first campaign, thanks to a Faustino Asprilla hat-trick, and over Juventus in the second of these two campaigns.
