Watching UEFA Champions League football is a must for fans of any team that manages to secure a spot in the prestigious competition, and therefore supporters of both Bayern Munich and particularly Newcastle United, given their rare appearances in the tournament, will be looking to score tickets for any relevant game.

Bayern Munich, as six times winners, will be the favourites for this clash and are one of the most decorated teams to have competed in either the European Cup or the UEFA Champions League.

Indeed their successes are evenly split between the two eras. Their European Cup triumphs came in quick succession, with Franz Beckenbauer and Gerd Muller key to their titles in 1974, 1975, and 1976.

Their UEFA Champions League wins came in 2001, against Valencia, in 2013, against Borussia Dortmund, and in 2020 against Paris Saint-Germain.

The Bavarian side even managed to lose five finals in between those victories. Two of those losses rank much higher than the others in terms of the manner of their defeats, both against Premier League opposition.

In the infamous 1999 UEFA Champions League Final Die Bayern were 1-0 ahead, thanks to a Mario Basler goal, with 90 minutes on the clock. Then Sir Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United side somehow netted twice in injury time, with both goals coming from substitutes the Scottish manager had thrown on.

That loss was hard to take, but in 2012, they suffered arguably as big a heartache. They faced Chelsea that year, and the final actually took place in their Allianz Arena home. The home side took the lead on 83 minutes when Thomas Muller headed in an opener.

They looked set to clinch the win before Didier Drogba equalized on 88 minutes, and the game went to penalties with Juan Mata saw his effort saved by Manuel Neuer to put Bayern Munich in a dominant position.

However, they were to be denied after both Ivica Olic, who had come on as a sub in extra time, and Bastian Schweinsteiger saw their penalties saved by Petr Cech, leading to Drogba scoring the crucial fifth Chelsea effort to give Roberto Di Matteo’s side the win.

Newcastle United’s involvement in the UEFA Champions League has been minimal; indeed, up to 2023/24, the St James’ Park side had only qualified for the competition on three occasions, and in one of those, they failed to get through the preliminary rounds.

In both 1997/98 and 2002/03, they did, however, secure memorable wins in the group stages, beating FC Barcelona 3-2 in their first campaign, thanks to a Faustino Asprilla hat-trick, and over Juventus in the second of these two campaigns.

Hamman spent just one season with Newcastle United, making 31 appearances, before moving to Liverpool in 1999.
