About Bayern Munich vs Celtic FC Tickets 2023/24

Tickets for UEFA Champions League action are hard to come by and, on the whole, fairly expensive. However, at SeatPick, you can access a huge inventory of tickets via hundreds of trusted resellers, making it easier to pick out the bargains.

This match sees German giants Bayern Munich face Celtic in what is a meeting of two teams with proven success in the competition.

Bayern Munich’s first successful stint in the European Cup saw the club win three titles on the spin and did so in style. 1974 saw the Bavarian side defeat Atletico Madrid 4-0 in a replay in Brussels, and the following year, it was Leeds United who were defeated. Goals from Franz Roth and Gerd Muller gave them a 2-0 win in Paris.

The trio of successes was completed in Glasgow, this time Saint-Etienne the losers following a 1-0 win courtesy of Franz Roth.

In 1982 they were beaten by Aston Villa in Rotterdam, and in 1987, an even more surprising loss, this time to FC Porto, was handed to the Bundesliga side.

The club’s loss in the 1999 UEFA Champions League is now, of course, the stuff of legend but is still hard to comprehend. Somehow Bayern Munich blew a 1-0 lead to lose 2-1 in injury time to Manchester United.

Fortunately, it took them two years to get over the monumental loss, Bayern Munich beating Valencia on penalties in Milan in 2001. 2010’s UEFA Champions League Final loss was a thoroughly disappointing affair, with Jose Mourinho’s Inter Milan easily emerging victorious, with Diego Milito scoring both goals in a 2-0 win.

2012 brought yet more pain and anguish, Bayern Munich facing Chelsea in their home stadium, only to lose on penalties to the Premier League side after a 1-1 draw which was secured by a late Didier Drogba equalizer.

Once again, their suffering was brief, a 2013 win over Borussia Dortmund at Wembley being particularly satisfying. 2020 was something of a bizarre experience, with Bayern Munich’s final against Paris Saint-Germain played in front of an empty stadium due to coronavirus restrictions.

Nonetheless, Hansi Flick’s side edged out their French opponents, with former PSG man Kingsley Coman scoring the only goal of the game.

Celtic are no stranger to European Cup success, albeit their period of reward came some time ago. In the late 1960s and early 1970s, the Bhoys, managed by legendary boss Jock Stein, the Glasgow side performed wonders both domestically and across the continent.

Having competed in other European competitions, such as the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup and the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup in the mid-1960s, getting as far as the Semi-Finals on two occasions, they made their first foray into the European Cup and made an immediate impact.

Stein’s side got all the way to the final and took on Inter Milan in Lisbon. The Italian side had far more experience in the competition and had won it in 1964 and 1965 and came into the final as favourites, but that did not deter Celtic.

Helenio Herrera’s side did take an early lead through Sandro Mazzola, but Celtic came roaring back with two goals in the second half from Tommy Gemmell and Stevie Chalmers to collect a famous win and, in doing so, became the first British team to win the revered tournament.

That win was by no means a flash in the pan. In 1970 they were once again in the final, but on this occasion, Feyenoord beat them in extra time at the San Siro in Milan. Further Semi-Final finishes came in 1971/72 and 1973/74, but since then, they have never gotten close to hitting those heights.

They are regular participants in the UEFA Champions League, albeit on many occasions in more recent years, they’ve failed to get through qualifying rounds or faltered in the group phase.

Bayern Munich vs Celtic Head-to-Head

These two teams have met in European competition on two occasions. The first came in the group stage of the 2003/2004 season, with Celtic giving Bayern Munich something of a fright in their own backyard. Alan Thompson put the away side ahead, and it took two late goals from Roy Makaay to take the win.

The return fixture ended in a goalless draw at Celtic Park.

In 2017/18, they were once again in the same group; this time, Bayern Munich eased to a 3-0 home win thanks to goals from Thomas Muller, Joshua Kimmich, and Mats Hummels. In Glasgow, Die Bayern edged out the home side 2-1, with Javi Martinez scoring the winner with 13 minutes left to play.

Bayern Munich vs Celtic Connections

Very few players have lined up for both Bayern Munich and Celtic, indeed, the only individual of note to have done so would have to be Scottish international forward Alan McInally.

The striker played at Celtic for three years between 1984 and 1987, playing 85 times and scoring 22 goals, winning domestic honours with the club before moving to Aston Villa and then to Bayern Munich in 1989. He played a total of 59 games for Bayern Munich, scoring 16 goals, and played a part in their 1989/90 Bundesliga success before moving back to Scotland to join Kilmarnock.
