Bayern Munich’s first European Cup campaign came in 1969/70 and was a brief affair. They were knocked out by Saint-Etienne in the First Round. Their next adventure in the competition came along in 1972/73, and this time, they made it through to the Quarter-Finals before Ajax dealt them a blow.

However, over the course of the next three seasons, they were unbeatable. They won the competition in 1973/74 when they beat Atletico Madrid in the replay of the European Cup Final, and twelve months later, they did it again, this time beating Leeds United 2-0 in Paris.

A third successive title was clinched in 1976 when Saint-Etienne were defeated 1-0 in Glasgow.

It would take another quarter of a century for Bayern Munich to taste victory in the competition again, with a series of final defeats dealing them a real blow.

In 1967 they were surprisingly beaten by Celtic in the final in Lisbon, with two late goals from the Glasgow side edging out Herrera’s side. 1972 saw them return to the final, this time under Italian boss Giovanni Invernizzi, but Johan Cruyff put on a masterclass to score twice and defeat the Serie A team in Rotterdam.

It took some 38 years for the club to get back to those heights, and that run came to an end under inspirational manager Jose Mourinho, with the Portuguese securing a UEFA Champions League triumph with a comfortable 2-0 win over Bayern Munich.

13 years later, Inter reached their sixth final in the competition, where Manchester City narrowly defeated them 1-0, with Spanish midfielder Rodri scoring the only goal of the game in the 2022/23 finale in Istanbul.

These two sides have met in four separate European campaigns, the first of which came in the group phase of the 2006/07 UEFA Champions League, with Bayern Munich running out 2-0 winners at the San Siro before the pair played out a draw at the Allianz Arena.

In 2010 they faced off in the UEFA Champions League Final, a game that Inter Milan won at a canter, with Diego Milito proving deadly, scoring both goals in a 2-0 win.
