Bayern Munich are a club with tremendous global reach. Fans of the team can be found in all corners of the globe, and when massive matches come along, such as any UEFA Champions League clash, the interest in tickets increases.
This is no surprise, given how accomplished the German side are both domestically and on the continent.
Overall Bayern Munich, up to 2023, have won ten European trophies, and the lion’s share of their successes have come when it’s mattered most, namely in the European Cup and its successor, the UEFA Champions League.
Their initial era of dominance in the competition saw them become only the third side to win three years in succession. They did so in 1974, 1975, and 1976 with wins over Atletico Madrid, Leeds United, and Saint-Etienne.
These were followed by final losses to Aston Villa in 1982 and FC Porto in 1987, which led to a period of relative failure. Between 1987 and 1999, they had no issue forcing their way to the latter stages of the competition, only to falter when faced with big opposition.
Thus, in 1988, 1990, and 1991, the club were eliminated in the Quarter-Finals by Real Madrid and Semi-Finals by AC Milan and Red Star Belgrade.
In 1994/95, the club’s first campaign of the UEFA Champions League era, they were once again knocked out in the Semi-Finals, this time by Ajax.
In 1998/99, they came up against Sir Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United in the UEFA Champions League Final, having also faced them in the group stage. They looked well on course to win their fourth title, with Mario Basler’s free-kick putting them ahead early on.
They hit the woodwork twice more and were in complete control before disaster struck, not once, but twice. Goals from Teddy Sheringham and OIe Gunnar Solskjaer in injury time, both following excellent David Beckham corners, gave the Premier League side a famous win.
2001 saw those demons exorcised, a win over Valencia on penalties helping to vanquish the memory of the United loss.
In 2010, they lost to Inter Milan in the final, but on this occasion, it was a defeat they well and truly deserved. In 2012, they suffered the agony of losing a UEFA Champions League Final in their own stadium, with Chelsea winning on penalties at the Allianz Arena after a 1-1 draw, which was only secured by a late Didier Drogba equalizer.
In 2013, Bayern Munich more than made up for that loss when they defeated German rivals Borussia Dortmund at Wembley Stadium, with Arjen Robben netting the decisive goal late on.
Bayern Munich’s sixth success came in somewhat subdued circumstances. Hansi Flicks’s side took on Paris Saint-Germain in an empty Estadio da Luz in Lisbon due to coronavirus restrictions. Kingsley Coman scored the only goal of the game against his former club to complete a 1-0 win.
Basque Country side Real Sociedad have plenty of UEFA Champions League experience, as well as two forays during the European Cup era, which goes beyond the scope you’d associate with a team of their relative size.
In 1981/82, their first campaign, they were knocked out in the First Round by CSKA Sofia, but the following season they got all the way to the Semi-Finals before losing to eventual winners SV Hamburger.
Their first campaign of the UEFA Champions League era came in 2003/04, where Raynald Denoueix’s side managed to get out of a tricky group before losing out to French side Lyon in the Round of 16.
Ten years later, they returned to the competition but finished bottom of a tough group, and 2023/24 saw them once again get back to the top table of UEFA action.
These two teams have never played each other in competitive European competition, adding another interesting dimension to this clash.
A few individuals have played for both Bayern Munich and Real Sociedad, including Spanish international right-back Alvaro Odriozola.
Another player who made a far more lasting impact on both clubs is midfield maestro Xabi Alonso. The 2010 FIFA World Cup winner started his professional career in San Sebastian, where he made 124 appearances before Rafa Benitez signed the player and brought him to Anfield.
At Liverpool, he rose to prominence, playing 210 games and helping the Anfield side to the UEFA Champions League title in 2005.
After six years at Real Madrid, he moved to Bayern Munich, where he ended his glittering playing career with three seasons in Germany, making 117 appearances and securing three Bundesliga titles before he called time on his playing career and started his managerial journey at first Real Sociedad, with their B team, and then with German side Bayer Leverkusen.
