SeatPick has developed a stellar reputation as a hub for secondary market tickets, and you can find the best-priced tickets for this UEFA Champions League clash today.

Bayern Munich’s sterling reputation in the European Cup/UEFA Champions League competition was well and truly secured between 1974 and 1976 when the Bavarian side won the competition three years on the trot.

This was quite an achievement, one that only Real Madrid and Ajax had managed previously, and came after wins over Atletico Madrid (4-0 in a replay), Leeds United (2-0) and Saint-Etienne (1-0).

Between 1976 and 2001, Bayern Munich didn’t manage to secure a fourth success, but that’s not through want of trying.

In 1982, they lost out to Aston Villa in Rotterdam; in 1987, it was FC Porto that beat them in Vienna, and then in 1999, in the UEFA Champions League, Manchester United dealt the hammer blow, winning 2-1 with late late goals to make it three finals losses in succession.

2001 proved the end of that worrying trend, victory over Valencia coming after a penalty shoot-out with veteran keeper Oliver Kahn saving Mauricio Pellegrini’s key spot-kick.

2010 and 2012 saw Bayern Munich once again the subject of final defeats to Inter Milan and Chelsea, the loss to the Blues all the harder to take given it took place at their home ground.

2013 saw the club take back the trophy after an exciting 2-1 win over Bundesliga rivals Borussia Dortmund at Wembley Stadium. In 2020, they made it six titles by beating Paris Saint-Germain in Lisbon.

Atletico Madrid are also well-versed in European final defeats; unfortunately, their rate of success at this point of the competition is far lower than Bayern Munich’s.

While Bayern Munich’s record of six wins from 11 finals is by no means prolific, Atletico’s run of zero successes from three final appearances, as of 2023, is somewhat worrying in comparison.

Indeed, Atletico Madrid’s first European Cup Final loss came at the hands of Bayern Munich in 1974, and that came after reaching the Semi-Finals in both 1958/59 and 1970/71.

Between 1978 and 1996, the Spanish capital club failed to qualify for the competition, and another ten-year hiatus occurred between 1997 and 2008, but since this period, they have been regular participants.

In 2013/14, Diego Simeone’s side beat AC Milan, FC Barcelona, and Chelsea to book a place in the UEFA Champions League Final, where they met local rivals Real Madrid, a team that would be a constant thorn in their side.

The final in Lisbon looked to be going Atletico’s way, but a Sergio Ramos equalizer in the 93rd minute, in response to Diego Godin’s opener, took the game to extra time, and further goals from Gareth Bale, Marcelo, and Cristiano Ronaldo crushed the Colchoneros.

Real Madrid then knocked Atletico Madrid out in the Quarter-Finals the following campaign before the two met in the UEFA Champions League Final once again. This time, it was Simeone’s side that equalized late on when Belgian winger Yannick Carrasco came off the bench to make it 1-1 after 79 minutes.

The game went to penalties, with Juanfran missing Atletico’s fourth effort, which led to Cristiano Ronaldo firing home the winning spot-kick at the San Siro.

Incredibly, Real Madrid then knocked out Atletico for a fourth successive season when they beat them 4-2 on aggregate in the Semi-Finals in 2016/17.

Bayern Munich vs Atletico Madrid Head-to-Head

These two teams have met in four separate European campaigns. As touched upon earlier, the first came in 1974 when Bayern Munich thumped their Spanish opponents 4-0 in the replay of the European Cup Final, the first game ending in a 1-1 draw two days earlier.

They next met in 2015/16 in the UEFA Champions League Semi-Finals, with Atletico winning their home leg thanks to a Saul Niguez goal before Bayern Munich won the second leg 2-1, with Antoine Griezmann’s second-half away goal being enough to see them through to the final.

The following season, in the group stage, the two teams exchanged 1-0 wins, and then in 2020/21, once again in the group phase, Bayern Munich beat Atletico Madrid 4-0 at the Allianz Arena, and the reverse game ended in a 1-1 draw. Both teams safely secured passage to the Round of 16.
