The New York Knicks were one of the founder members of the NBA in 1946 but arguably have very much failed to achieve anything like the success that a team of their stature should have by this stage of their extensive history.

Double NBA Title Winners

In 1969-70 the team secured their first NBA Finals triumph when, with the help of star player Willis Reed, they defeated the Los Angeles Lakers in seven games.

They faced the Lakers again in the NBA Finals two years later but lost out in five games before once again beating them the year after.

The 80s saw the Knicks pick up Atlantic Division titles but fail to make a real dent in the playoff picture, this despite the fact that NBA legend Patrick Ewing was giving his all to the cause throughout his 15 years at the franchise.

Under coach Pat Riley the Knicks did get to the 1993-94 NBA Finals but narrowly lost out to the Houston Rockets in seven games. Anthony Mason was another player who played a part in a relative period of resurgence.

They once again reached this peak in 1998-99 before being eased out by the San Antonio Spurs.

Downward Spiral

The seasons following that NBA Final loss have been somewhat forgettable, albeit between 2020/21 and 2023/24 they reached the postseason in three out of four campaigns, representing a real return to form.

The team's biggest rivals are considered the Miami Heat, the Philadelphia 76ers, the Boston Celtics, the Chicago Bulls, and local rivals, the Brooklyn Nets.

Famous Fans

Perhaps unsurprisingly, given the team's iconic status and location, the New York Knicks have a number of famous fans, perhaps the most famous of which is film director Spike Lee.

As well as Lee, there are a host of other famous celebrities known to catch a game, including Howard Stern, Ben Stiller, Jerry Seinfeld, Woody Allen, Chris Rock, and Jon Stewart.
