Girona FC History

Girona FC was founded in 1930 and the club is the sole representative of the small Spanish town of Girona, located 100km northeast of Barcelona.

Five years after its formation, Girona played in the second tier – Segunda Division – for the first time. Over the subsequent decades Blanquivermells floated in and out of the lower divisions of the Spanish football pyramid, spending much time in the third and fourth tiers.

Girona came agonisingly close to earning promotion to La Liga in 2015, but ultimately lost in the play-offs. Two years later the club achieved its long-held ambition of rising to the top flight, finishing as runners-up in Segunda Division.

2017 also saw the City Football Group (CFG), which owns Premier League side Manchester City, acquire a stake of more than 44 per cent in Girona FC. These clubs have been affiliated ever since, with a handful of Man City youngsters having joined the Spanish club on loan for regular first-team football.

Girona lasted two seasons in La Liga but failed to avoid relegation in 2019. The team returned to the top flight in 2022 and subsequently recorded a 10th-place finish with 49 points, just a few points shy of qualifying for European football.

Blanquivermells continued from strength to strength into the 2023/24 campaign, fighting at the top of the table with heavyweights Real Madrid and FC Barcelona. Girona occupied 2nd place halfway into the season, level on points with Real Madrid and seven ahead of Barcelona. Led by manager Míchel, the team picked up 15 wins and incurred just a single defeat in 19 league matches.

Up until the end of the 2024, Girona FC had never won a major trophy. The club's furthest progression in the Copa del Rey came in 2019, culminating in defeat to Real Madrid in the quarter-finals.

Spanish defender Migue amassed 231 appearances for Girona and he was the club's all-time leading appearances at the time of his farewell in 2014.

Álex Granell elapsed that tally when he made his 232nd and final outing for Blanquivermells in 2020. The midfielder initially played in Girona's youth academy but didn't progress to the first-team. Granell rejoined his boyhood club in 2014, a decade after he had been released aged 16.

The signing of Ukraine striker Artem Dovbyk was a revelation during his first and only season in Spain, with 24 goals in La Liga. In the summer of 2024, Girona sold Dovbyk to Serie A side AS Roma.
