The first-ever edition of this match took place in 1985, contested by Euro 1984 winners France and 1983 Copa América champions Uruguay. Led by captain Michel Platini, Les Bleus recorded a 2-0 win at the Parc des Princes.
In 1993, Argentina met Denmark following the Danes' impressive triumph at Euro 1992. The fixture was played at Estadio José María Minella in Argentina, where the home side ran out 5-4 victors on penalties following a 1-1 draw. Diego Maradona, Gabriel Batistuta & Diego Simeone featured in the event and they all converted from the penalty spot.
This intercontinental matchup was renewed almost 30 years after its previous edition. In March 2022, UEFA revealed the fixture between Argentina & Italy would be referred to as the Finalissima, and that it would be held at Wembley Stadium in London.
La Albiceleste had clinched Copa America honours while the Italians overcame England in the Euro 2020 final. The Finalissima was played in front of a sold out Wembley crowd of 87,112, significantly higher than the attendance figures at both of the previous two editions.
Lautaro Martínez, Ángel Di María & Paulo Dybala all got on the scoresheet as Argentina defeated Italy, 3-0.
Tickets for the game were sold directly through UEFA, which saw ticket prices start from £25. The most expensive tickets via UEFA were priced at £99.
Argentina would return to the Finalissima three years later, after successfully defending their Copa America crown in 2024. Spain, meanwhile, would feature in the match for the first time as La Roja claimed their fourth European title.
