EFL Championship History

The second tier of the English football pyramid has been called the English Football League Championship since 2004. The competition was known as the old Second Division from 1892-1992, and then the new First Division until the end of the 2003/04 season.

The old Second Division comprised of 22 competing teams for much of the 20th century, before expanding to 24 clubs in 1988.

The nature of the league, and the fiercely competitive nature that thrives within it, means that some of the best teams in English football have, at one time or another, had to battle their way through in order to get back to where they may well feel they belong.

The likes of Manchester United, Liverpool, Chelsea, Manchester City, Tottenham, and Newcastle United have all been crowned winners of this division. Notable absences from this list are Arsenal and Everton, neither of whom have ever had to compete at this level.

Barnsley are considered to be the team that has spent the most seasons in the second tier of English football, mainly due to their 30-year continuous stay in the old Second Division from 1898-1932. The likes of Cardiff City, Derby County, Preston North End & Queens Park Rangers have also become accustomed to competing in the EFL Championship.

EFL Championship Format

The format of the Championship has remained the same for several years. The regular season usually runs from August until the following May, during which time all 24 teams will play 46 games – home and away against every other club in the division.

At the end of the regular season the top two sides will earn automatic promotion to the Premier League, while the bottom three face relegation to League One. Teams that finish 3rd-6th will qualify for the EFL Championship play-offs, with only one of them able to secure promotion to the Premier League.

The Championship Play-off Final is held at Wembley Stadium and is considered to be the most financially rewarding game in club football, mainly due to the massive surge in revenues as well as payments from TV rights.

The financial gulf between the Premier League and the Championship is stark. Championship clubs typically receive around £8m in TV rights income for a season, whereas even the bottom-placed team in the Premier League receives over £100m in total payments.

The 2023/24 season saw the Championship break its own record for total attendance, with a 22 per cent increase on the previous campaign. This figure also topped several of Europe's top-flight competitions, such as the German Bundesliga which sold an estimated 12,089,363 tickets in 2023/24. The tally for the Spanish La Liga was in the region of 15,794,280, while the Italian Serie A recorded around 11,729,280 ticket sales.

The 2024/2025 campaign saw a small drop in total Championship spectators - with a total of 11,750,535. The average for the campaign was 22,004 per game.
