Tottenham vs Aston Villa History

These two Premier League behemoths have countless connections, with a large number of star turns having played for both clubs, including; American keeper Brad Friedel, full-back Kyle Walker, double-winning captain legend Danny Blanchflower, French winger David Ginola forwards Robbie Keane, Peter Crouch, and Darren Bent as well as many many more.

The first meeting between the two clubs came in FA Cup action in March 1903, with Aston Villa the victors, and on the whole, the Midlands club have fared pretty well away at Tottenham.

In 1991-92 Ron Atkinson’s side thumped Spurs 5-2 at White Hart Lane with goals from Kevin Richardson, Ian Olney, Dwight Yorke, Tony Daley, and Cyrille Regis doing the damage and when the two teams met in the FA Cup, after a goalless draw at Villa Park, Aston Villa won the replay thanks to another Yorke goal.

In November 1994, the two teams played out a seven-goal thriller. Dalian Atkinson and a Graham Fenton brace saw Aston Villa go three goals up after just 27 minutes, but Teddy Sheringham, Jurgen Klinsmann, and an own goal from keeper Mark Bosnich leveled things up.

However, Dean Saunders then fired home a 90th-minute winner. This isn’t to say that Tottenham haven’t also had their days in the sun. In May 2005, Tottenham put Aston Villa to the slaughter with Frederic Kanoute, the chief tormentor, scoring twice, and Ledley King, Andy Reid, and Stephen Kelly also netting in a 5-1 victory.

Perhaps the most famous Premier League fixture these two have played came in October 2007, with Bulgarian magician Dimitar Berbatov opening the scoring after 20 minutes, only for Martin Laursen to score twice for Villa. Gabriel Agbonlahor made it 3-1 after 40 minutes, and the game looked out of sight when Craig Gardner scored a fourth.

However, Martin Jol’s side did not give up, and Pascal Chimbonda pulled a goal back before a Robbie Keane penalty made things interesting. Then in the 93rd minute, Younes Kaboul made it 4-4 to send the home fans into delirium. Jol was fired just over three weeks later.

In recent seasons Aston Villa have more than had the upper hand on their visits to North London. In May 2021, Dean Smith’s side went behind to an early goal from Netherlands international Steven Bergwijn, but an own goal from Sergio Reguilon and a winner from Ollie Watkins were enough to secure all three points.

On New Year’s Day 2023, Aston Villa triumphed again at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium with second-half efforts from Emiliano Buendia and Douglas Luiz seeing them home as newly appointed Spanish boss Unai Emery continued a fine spell in charge of the club.
