Tottenham vs Brentford History

These two sides haven’t met that often in league or cup action, and indeed league meetings did not happen at all between 1949 and 2021, but the two London sides do have some connections in relation to former players.

Former England Under 21 international Brian Statham played for both Tottenham and Brentford, as did creative midfielder Alex Pritchard and forward Johnny Brooks.

These two met in Premier League action for the first time in December 2021 when an own goal from Sergio Canos and a second from Heung-Min Son was enough to give Tottenham an easy 2-0 win over Brentford.

However, Thomas Frank turned the tables on the North London side in May 2023 when Brentford mounted a great comeback triumph. Harry Kane put the home side ahead on eight minutes only to see the away side roar back after the break when first Bryan Mbeumo netted twice, and then Yoane Wissa added a third late on to secure a memorable 3-1 win.

These league games were the first between Tottenham and Brentford since 1949, with the Bees having not made the leap to the English top tier in the long intervening period.

The two sides did meet repeatedly in English League Cup action, usually with spectacular results. In 1998 Tottenham secured a 3-2 away win in the first leg of their encounter, and in the return match, forward Andy Scott gave Brentford the lead at White Hart Lane, with goals from Allan Nielsen, Sol Campbell, and Chris Armstrong putting Spurs back in the hot seat, with Lloyd Owusu pulling a goal back.

Two years later, again in the League Cup, the two teams ground out a goalless draw at Griffin Park, and in the second game, Oyvind Leonhardsen and Steffen Iversen eased Tottenham to an aggregate win.
