KNVB Beker History and Format
This competition is the primary knockout tournament in Dutch football, with the first edition of the KNVB Beker staged back in the 1898/99 season. RAP Amsterdam were crowned the inaugural winners of this trophy.
The Dutch Cup comprises of professional as well as amateur clubs, with more than 100 teams entering the competition each year. Most Eredivisie clubs enter the KNVB Beker at the first round, except for those teams participating in European club competitions, who instead join in the second round of the Cup.
AFC Ajax won the Dutch Cup for the first time in 1917, with their two (modern-day) rivals Feyenoord and PSV Eindhoven not celebrating success in this competition until 1930 and 1950, respectively.
The trophy was changed to one made out of silver in 1946, and it remains in use today. A golden trophy was commissioned to commemorate the 100th edition of the tournament, which took place in the 2017/18 season.
The Dutch Cup final traditionally takes place at De Kuip, in Rotterdam, towards the end of April. No matter the venue, or the opponents, you can be sure that supporters of both teams involved in the Dutch Cup final will be buzzing come match day.
KNVB Beker Most Successful Teams
Ajax is the most decorated team in the Dutch Cup, with no fewer than 20 titles. De Godenzonen claimed this trophy four times from 1967-72, with superstar Johan Cruyff spearheading the team, followed by another six title wins from 1998-2010.
Feyenoord won the KNVB Beker for a 13th time in 2018, and only Ajax had been a more frequent winner of the tournament. PSV clinched title number 11 in the 2022/23 season, to move within two of Feyenoord's tally.
AZ Alkmaar were mildly successful in the late 1970s and early 80s, with three Cup triumphs in the space of five years. More than three decades passed before AZ added a fourth KNVB Beker to the collection.
KNVB Beker Recent Winners
The winners of the Dutch Cup in recent seasons have mostly been either Ajax or PSV, though the likes of Feyenoord, Vitesse and PEC Zwolle have each captured the title at least once since 2014.
Vitesse defeated AZ Alkmaar in the 2016/17 final, 2-0, to lift this trophy for the very first time. Two years earlier FC Groningen also claimed a maiden KNVB Beker with victory over Zwolle.
