Portsmouth FC History

The club was founded back in 1898, though it wasn't until the 1920/21 season when Portsmouth first took part in the Football League. Placed in the newly-formed Third Division, Pompey climbed up the table and finished top of the pile in 1924, rising up to the Second Division for the first time.

Just three years later Pompey sealed promotion to the First Division and they would remain in the top flight for the entirety of the 1930s and 40s. Portsmouth claimed a maiden First Division title in 1949 and then followed this up with back-to-back league successes the following year. This came about a decade after Pompey celebrated FA Cup glory for the first time with a 4-1 victory over Wolves; this was the last FA Cup final before the outbreak of WWII.

Portsmouth narrowly avoided relegation, twice, towards the end of the 1950s before eventually succumbing to the drop at the conclusion of the 1958/59 season. Pompey remained in the Second Division for several years before they finished rock bottom of the 1977/78 Third Division.

Portsmouth missed out on promotion to the First Division in 1985 before rising up two seasons later, only to drop back down the year after. The Football League underwent a rebranding which saw the introduction of the Premier League in 1992. The old Second Division thus became known as the new First Division, and Portsmouth narrowly survived relegation from this league several times from the mid-90s through the early 2000s.

Eventually, in 2003, Portsmouth FC gained Premier League status for the first time. With Harry Redknapp at the helm, Pompey climbed up the Premier League table and even reached two FA Cup finals in the space of three years; Portsmouth hoisted the FA Cup in 2008, almost 70 years after last winning this famous trophy, before losing to Chelsea in the FA Cup final two years later.

The club's seven-year uninterrupted spell in the English top flight came to an end with the conclusion of the 2009/10 season. The team starred the likes of David James, Sol Campbell, Jermain Defoe, Peter Crouch, Sulley Muntari, and Niko Kranjčar during this period.

After winning the FA Cup in 2008, Pompey took part in the subsequent edition of the UEFA Cup (precursor to the Europa League but failed to progress from their group which also comprised of AC Milan and German side Wolfsburg among others.

Portsmouth FC Today

There hasn't been all too much to celebrate for supporters of Portsmouth in recent years, with this mainly down to the club's financial troubles which lasted for much of the 2010s.

Pompey spent more than a decade outside the top two divisions of the English football pyramid, before eventually achieving promotion to the EFL Championship at the end of the 2023/24 season. John Mousinho's side were crowned champions of League One with 97 points from 46 games, earning automatic promotion to the second tier.
