The 1986–87 season was the first in which the EFL play-off finals were introduced. Teams that missed out on automatic promotion to the next tier were granted the opportunity to fight for promotion via the play-offs. This competition (League 2) was still known as the Fourth Division when the play-offs were initiated. This, of course, came before the rebranding of the Football League in 2004.
Aldershot won the inaugural Fourth Division play-off final, with victory over Wolves. The play-off final was originally a two-legged tie, with either side hosting the other. Swansea City and Leyton Orient were the play-off winners in the following two seasons, before it was decided that future editions would take place at Wembley Stadium in a one-legged play-off final.
The play-off final was held at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff from 2001-06, during which time Wembley was undergoing renovations. It was during this time (ahead of the 2004/05 season) that the Fourth Division rebranded to League 2. The League 2 play-off final was staged at the new Wembley Stadium for the first time at the end of the 2006/07 campaign. 61,589 spectators watched on as Bristol Rovers defeated Shrewsbury Town – a record attendance for a fourth-tier final.
The League 2 Play-off final has emerged as one of the most highly anticipated fixtures in English football, raking in tons of interest which goes beyond the supporters of the participating clubs.
The 2000/01 edition of this fixture brought an end to a run of five consecutive years in which the final ended 1-0. That streak was stomped out in spectacular fashion, as Blackpool ran out 4-2 winners against Leyton Orient at the Millennium Stadium. The eventual winners were trailing inside the opening 30 seconds but drew level just before half-time. Two second-half goals saw the Seasiders heading up to the new Second Division.
Southend United left it late in the 2015 League 2 play-off final, scoring in the dying embers of extra-time to send the game to penalties, before Wycombe Wanderers had two spot-kicks kept out by Southend keeper Dan Bentley
34,000 attended the 2022/23 League 2 play-off final at Wembley, where Stockport County took on Carlisle United. The latter were behind for more than half the game before substitute Omari Patrick equalised in the closing minutes of regular time. Carlisle would go on to win the ensuing penalty shootout, 5-4, to rise up into the Sky Bet League One.
Winners of the League Two Play-off final in recent seasons have included the likes of Blackpool, Coventry City, Port Vale, and Crawley Town.
Teams such as Exeter City and Newport County have also featured in the League 2 play-off final, but have failed to achieve victory in this all-important match at Wembley Stadium.
