Leagues Cup Format

This competition was founded in 2019, initially comprising of just eight teams – four each from Major League Soccer and the Mexican Liga MX. The tournament therefore would begin at the quarter-final stage.

Since 2023 the Leagues Cup has served as the regional cup for CONCACAF, featuring all teams from MLS and Liga MX. The participating clubs are split into 15 groups consisting of three teams each. The top two teams in every group advance to the Round of 32, while the reigning Leagues Cup champions receive a bye to the knockout phase.

The top three Leagues Cup teams (regardless of nation) also qualify for the subsequent CONCACAF Champions Cup, with the Leagues Cup winners receiving a bye to the last-16.
