The Utah Jazz started life as the New Orleans Jazz in 1974 and joined the NBA as part of their latest expansion, and they spent five seasons in this guise, all of which saw the team secure losing records before they relocated to Salt Lake City to become the Utah Jazz.

During their time in New Orleans, the Jazz experienced a number of issues in relation to their home arenas, and by the fifth season in Utah, they had finally secured their first-ever playoff berth when they won the Midwest Division in 1983-84 and finished second in the Western Conference before losing to the Phoenix Suns in the Conference semifinals.
