Twente competed in the UEFA Cup (precursor to the Europa League) semi-regularly in the 1970s and again in the 90s, and even lost out to Borussia Monchengladbach in the 1975 UEFA Cup final.
Steve McClaren was in charge when FC Twente played in UEFA Champions League qualifying in 2008 and again the following year, though the Dutch side bowed out to Arsenal and then Portuguese outfit Sporting CP.
Finally in 2010 the Tukkers experienced true Champions League football for the first time, featuring in the group stage after being crowned Eredivisie champions the season prior. Twente shared a group with Tottenham, Inter Milan & Werder Bremen, and managed to avoid defeat in all three home games.
FC Twente finished 3rd in the group and were therefore demoted to the Europa League. The Dutch team advanced to the quarter-finals before crashing out to Villarreal. The following year Twente progressed to the Europa League Round of 16 but lost to FC Schalke.
