John Mayer, a long-term fan of the Grateful Dead, guest hosted The Late Show in February 2015 and chose to invite guitarist Bob Weir for a studio performance, which began the ball rolling on the Dead and Company.

Mayer went on to team up with other members of the Grateful Dead, Mickey Hart and Bill Kreutzmann and they were joined by former RatDog keyboardist Jeff Chimenti and bass player Oteil Burbridge from The Allman Brothers Band.

They played their debut concert show in 2015 at New York's Madison Square Garden, and a full-length tour was announced soon after.

Dead and Company went on an extensive summer tour in 2017, playing 20 shows across North America. Among the highlights of that road trip were their two shows at Chicago's Wrigley Field, where they played to a combined audience of almost 80,000.

They would go on to tour most years but did not release studio material, thereby making their live shows all the more enticing, as the only route to getting to feel the majesty of what the band were producing.
